We woke up early so that we could pack up to head to Valparaiso. Last night before bed, we looked at our Delta flights home and saw we were no longer on the upgrade list. Shelly had checked multiple times before we left to make sure we were on it. So this morning she called Delta (in Chile – but really in Atlanta). We were on the phone for about an hour and the “supervisor” said we should be on the list then after talking with others realized Delta changed the rules a few months back that you couldn’t be upgraded to the lie flat seats. Well, Shelly pulled her magic and I think the supervisor realized we had been given bad information multiple times and we had had an option of using upgrade coupons Shelly ... read more

Ever since we arrived in South America, from Ecuador to Chile, we have been constantly aware of the fame of Bernardo O’Higgins. This son of an Irish father (who happened to be the Governor of Chile) and a Chilean mother, was born in Chile on 20th August 1778. He was sent to England for his education, returned to Chile to become a sailor and ended up an Admiral and then, upon independence, the Supreme Director of the country. He is recognised as Chile´s liberator, as well as Peru´s, in the fight for independence from Spain. The name O´Higgins is everywhere, and every city has an Avenida O´Higgins. In our ignorance we knew little of this famous man, so, on Wednesday we spent the morning in the maritime museum in Valparaiso, where a whole salon is dedicated ... read more

Traveller’s reviews of Valparaiso are polarised; some people rave about this city and others don’t quite “get it”, using words like ‘underwhelmed’ or “over-hyped”. Our views lie somewhere in the middle, although we are not ashamed to say that we tend to fall into the latter group, despite understanding this city´s charm and appeal for many. The view from our hotel window is stunning, indeed we would say that “’Valpo” as it is generally called, is vibrant and vivacious with wonderful vistas. It is also, however, grim and grimy with awful graffiti. It is this dichotomy, in fact, this faded chic and shabbiness, that has in the past attracted artists and poets, but like its faded grandeur, these talented bohemians seem to be long gone. Valpo is all a bit ‘passé’! “The ... read more

We have all arrived here in Vina del Mar, here is a catch up from Chaitan. Leaving Chaiten, we got an early morning ferry ride to the island of Chiloe, where we slept overnight at Castro. Leaving Castro the next day we continued north to Chacao where we caught another ferry to the mainland and Puerto Montt, then onto Valdivia on the coast. We made a detour to visit a New Zealand owned farm called 'Manuka' it is now the biggest dairy farm here in Chile. Both Jack and David had connections here and we were invited for lunch and a tour of the farm, this was enjoyed by the farmers and non farmers alike. After the farm tour we headed out to the coast for the night at Valdivia. This morning Cristian left us and ... read more

South America » Chile » Valparaíso Region » Isla Negra December 4th 2014

On Thursday, we signed up with a local company, Turistik, for the ride to the Coast to visit Pablo Neruda’s seashore home, Isla Negra. The tour offered the best of both worlds, the opportunity to see this Museum and, afterwards, a visit to a new organic winery in one of Chile’s youngest wine producing valleys, San Antonio. One of their vans was picking us up at 8:15 AM in front of the W Hotel, and taking us to their main depot area in the Parque Araucano Shopping Center to meet the vehicle designated for this particular tour. It is a well-organized enterprise that we had used in the past. The drive to Neruda’s house was heading south on the Costanera highway. It reminds me somewhat or the Florida’s Turnpike in that it has Toll stations along ... read more

Here we go again! All the motos are on their way to Valparaiso for our Patagonia Expedition - we fly in at the end of October for more South American adventure. We have a great team ready to ride with us from Chile, over the Andes into Central Argentina before exploring the fascinating terrain of Argentina Patagonia on our way to Ushuaia. With only four weeks to go before we fly out to Chile to rendezvous with our motos we shipped to Valparaiso a couple of weeks ago, the excitement is mounting amongst our small group of adventurers. Joining us on this Patagonia Expedition we have four riders that have been with us to the High Andes a couple of years ago - Tiny and Rippa Campbell from down the Naki, both riding their KTM's and ... read more

It's challenging trying to wade through romantic advances as a foreigner. For some reason I've been meeting a lot of guys here and I can't quite put my finger on why. I really don't get this much action back at home. To not put people on blast, my friends and I decided to name them. There's Pheromone Guy, Persistent Guy, Old-man Guy? I'm not going to touch on that one! Sleeping Beauty Guy, Brazilian Guy, Horseback Guide Guy, and then one Guy who shall remain doubly nameless. Brittney has been joking and calling me the South American man magnet. Yes, Chilean men are fascinated by black women. It's rare that they see one. But at this point, I don't know if I can even blame it on that. I was black last time too! But this ... read more

If it doesn’t hit you in the front side, it’ll hit you in the back! Chilean slang is very infectious and this time around, I've been using a lot of it. I don’t just speak Spanish anymore. I speak Chilean! It really is its on language. When I went out with my host sister and her friends, I was talking to Pablo about dating (he was having lady drama) and this is what he said. “Las minas de aca son frescas, ¿cachai? Por eso no las pesco. Todo lo cabro chico tienen que aprender eso po." I really enjoyed talking to him but I laughed because I realized that if I hadn't have spent so much time in this culture I would have had NO EARTHLY idea what he was talking about! Even a native Spanish ... read more

Screaming at the top of my lungs in the Plaza de Viña is how I started my day today. If you had just gotten out of a colectivo and noticed that your left thumb did NOT get the memo you might have done the same thing. I can only hope that most people did not understand the words that came out of my mouth as I stood in front of a busy colectivo stop emitting a blood curdling cry. I slammed my thumb in the colectivo door! I don't even mean that I banged my thumb with the door. No. I mean I slammed the car door completely shut and my thumb was in it! I have never been so clumsy as I am here. It was like this last time too only this time I've ... read more
