Hola blogging buddies. I am still here and again I will say, I am fine. I did lay low for a couple of days, partly to regain my composure and confidence and also taking care of some things closer to home. The weather has changed a bit ,with a cooler air mass passing by.Not sure how weather tracks down here, certainly do not have the benefit of Claire Martin or Ian Black explaining the weather patterns in detail, but from my balcony I can see and feel the change with a cooler air mass and even some rain the other night. For a Canadian it is still a pretty fine temperature but I see people bundled up like it was the dead of winter at times. In the past few days, notwithstanding black monday when I had my difficulties, ... read more

The ship docks early at Valparaíso. We have a few issues with our on-board account to resolve. Eventually we say goodbye to the MS Veendam, which has carried us to Antarctica and back. We sailed 3588 nautical miles, which is 4128 miles or 6645 kilometres. We board the bus for our tour. Sylvia, our guide, turns out to have dual Chilean/Canadian citizenship. (She spends part of the year teaching Spanish in Montreal, where her daughter lives.) It's a grey, dreary and fairly cool day with occasional drizzle, but Sylvia promises that the weather will be beautiful when we reach the valley. Valparaíso is a port city built up from the sea into the sides of rocky hills. The way many of the buildings are built into and around sheer cliffs defies belief. The bus starts at ... read more

We slept well enough on our second night in country. In the morning our hotel stay included another ample buffet breakfast similar to yesterday’s breakfast. I again enjoyed the tiny Polish style sausages, but who knows, these may be Chilean Sausages because they seem to be reappearing everywhere we have breakfast. One new treat was cherimoya juice. For me I can only say it tasted somewhat like pear juice, only much better. I partook of several glasses. We readied our luggage with HAL tags for boarding, and decided to go down early and wait for our ride to the ship, scheduled to pick us up at noon. While waiting we spotted another couple that we had first spotted at the Eurotel, deduced they had taken a tour similar to ours, and evidently had spent the night ... read more

Happy New Year blogging buddies, it is a quiet morning here in Valparaiso,at least on my street. The city parties hard at new years eve so a day of rest is called for. I have settled into my new home quite comfortably and am getting used to kitchen and the hot water system which provides surprises in mid shower!!!The Humboldt current right down my back!!!Brrrrr. There are a few things missing from the apt and I will be shopping for them when the stores open again.Dish towels, can opener that sort of thing.I do have my swiss army knife so cork screw and bottle opener are always close at hand. Be prepared as the scouts taught me.Yesterday the sun burned off the fog at about 1pm and the city and sea were bathed in the glorious light.Quite ... read more

We have experienced another rough night at sea, but it turned out to be not quite as bad as the prior night. It appears as we head down toward the Horn, sea conditions will worsen a bit each day, so this is our time to see if we are going to be able handle Antarctica on a future voyage on a much smaller ship. We awoke this morning, pulled the curtains back to find an ASROC rocket launcher staring us back in the face. This is the home port of the biggest portion of the Chilean Navy, so there a bunch of Frigates and Destroyers moored alongside. Steve is not really up-to-snuff on his Jane’s Naval Order of Battle, but he thinks the vessels have a Russian design look, versus a U.S. look. The first leg ... read more

My new favourite city in the world is the crazy, quirky, kooky, arty, twisty-turny, topsy-turvy city of Valparaiso. The whole city is built around a landscape of 42 hills, and looks like it was designed by either an eccentric genius, a very brave architect or a madman. The city is a maze of steep, winding streets that coil around the hills and climb up and down. The layout is random and chaotic. Getting from A to B is not intuitive, and you'll find yourself going via C, D and E in the process. If you look at Valparaiso on a map, it looks like someone threw down a bowl of cooked spaghetti when they planned it. Adding to the confusion, there is a rabbit-warren of side passages and stairs which link many of the roads. If ... read more

We’ve found Lonely Planet to be a mixed bag. First it’s full of lots of useful facts and figures and gives you the feel for places. It also gives you a good idea of some places to stay and eat. The Yellow House in Valparaiso was one of those, being the writer’s favourite choice and we really enjoyed being there. It’s got character and soul. That’s what makes or breaks an overnight stop for me. In terms of maps for navigating the country….forget it! The maps conveniently omit or add roads at will. It reminds me of the time we drove across Europe using just the map in the back of my Dad’s diary. But it adds an extra dimension in meeting the locals. Argentinian’s are really friendly and always willing to help and give directions. ... read more

Over the weekend, some of the girls from Spanish School and I decided to make the trek out to El Maraido Glacier about two hours east of Santiago. Although we originally planned to catch the bus out there, Katie and I were met with an amazing surprise when we were picked up from the bus station by Felipe, the guy that Christiana from class was couch surfing with. The journey became increasingly interesting when the road became gravel (were in something smaller than a Holden Barina) but after a few words of encouragement and amazing driving skills on Felipes part we managed to make it there. Usually entry to the park is 2.000 pesos ($4) per person, however the park ranger was so impressed that Felipe had managed to bring three girls with him that he ... read more

The bus to valparaiso was great, nice comfortable seats, attentive staff, cheap and on time. Probably the nicest bus we have ever been on, and only cost about £3 each! After we arrived we had to get a local bus to the hostel, which was at the top of one of the hills. Valpo is a port town, built around the sea, but all but the oldest development has been on the many hills surrounding the port. The houses are built on steep inclines, accessed by steep roads, very long crazy staircases or a series of old funicular railways, which are being slowly restored and reopened by the government. Our hostel was at the top of one of these hills - cerro Allegre .The hostel was more of a B&B really and was lovely and homely, ... read more
