Our flight from Buenos Aires- Santiago (Chile) in first class went very quickly and it was great to have a couple of hours of pampering, starting with the first class lounge at the airport, followed by a meal on the plane and a film in the flat bed seats! When we arrived in Santiago it was around 5.30pm so we got a taxi to our hostel, which turned out to be one of our favourite hostels we have stayed in so far this trip.
Our room was huge with a great hot shower, the staff were really friendly, it was central and it had a swimming pool. We got changed and decided to head out for a nice meal and some drinks for our last night in South America, which we were both pretty sad about. The last 5 weeks have gone so quick for us! Anyway we headed downtown to a Thai restaurant/bar which Scott had picked as it had great reviews and it didn’t disappoint.
It wasn’t like a normal restaurant in that it was like a big house with different rooms, the decor was amazing and the ambiance really nice. We had cocktails followed by green Thai
curry and pad Thai noodles (our favourites- can’t wait for the food in Asia!) and a cheeky desert, before realising we didn’t have much money on us so couldn’t get any more drinks (oh the perils of being on a budget!), so got the bill and called it a night; it was a great meal and a really nice way to end our South America adventure.
For our only full day in Chile we did some sightseeing, taking in the government house, main shopping street and Santa Lucia national park, which was lovely and we had some great views over the city once we reached the top. Unfortunately Scott had cut open his big toe in the park (like only Scott could) so we didn’t stay long, but we saw what we wanted to. We were both suprised (maybe due to a lack of research) by how modern Chile was as a country, when compared to a lot of the other areas we had travelled in SA - it was very similar to any western european city and the country itself was in joyous celebrations at the news that the miners from the August 5th earthquake would finally be
rescued within a matter of days.
We also went to the weekend fish market and then chilled out by the hostel pool for the afternoon as it was so hot- we didn’t expect this and it was a really nice surprise as we know for the next few weeks we will be in jumpers and warm clothes!
We had some time for a quick dinner before going to the airport, and although upon leaving Buenos Aires we had both vowed not to have any more meat for a while, as we had gorged on it over the past 3 days, we ended up in a steak restaurant having the biggest steaks we had had yet! They were really yummy (even though the waiter forgot our chips so we just had steak and mushrooms!) and we headed off to the airport satisfied, really sad to be leaving South America, as we have loved it so much and it exceeded all our expectations, but really excited for the next part of our trip- New Zealand and the campervan!

What a time you have had in South America! I must get there now! I am so proud of you both - I think you will probably have a different outlook on life after such a trip. Anyway, Scott - stay away from the sheep in NZ! Can't wait to hear about the campervan. Love you both very much. Auntie Susan xxxxxxx
