Jooeee beste lezers, hoe is het met jullie? Wat is er nog allemaal gebeurd in Belgie? Hier bloggen we op onze laatste avond in Chili (voorlopig toch). Here goes.

I tried to think of something cute and funny to name this entry (I know - it would be the first time) but there is really nothing else I could possibly call it! It's gonna be about Torres del Paine and anyone who has ever been there, wants to go there or otherwise knows about it, those words sum up so much! It is just a spectacular National Park! Dominated by the three horns (middle, north and west I think - I really should go check) the stark beauty is apparent straight away. Until now I hadn't really commented on the weather, which to be fair is a bit of an injustice to the weather. Patagonia weather is typically windy, windy, windy, rainy and cold. I'm very happy to report that we had ONE day of ... read more

Today is our travel day. We said goodbye to our new friends last night (they are hiking and kayaking Tierra del Fuego for the next week) and to Daniel this morning. We have a long drive back to Punta Arenas, a late flight and overnight in the Santiago airport, and then an early morning flight to Buenos Aires... We end up biding our time in Punta Arenas - Eric at the casino and me at the spa. :) Hasta manana.... read more

"The Yeasayer - 2080" "The Doves - Last Broadcast" "Modest Mouse - Trailer Trash" At ten am on the second day of my hike at the famous, Torres Del Paine I found myself on a boat back home to my hostel. There were not many others on the boat with me! A girl from the United States with a sprained ankle, a man from Israel with a blown knee and a handful of others that had taken on the Torres and are now heading home defeated. As for myself, a knee injury! DAMN you Torres Del Paine!!! I arrived late to Puerto Natales thanks to my near Navimag disaster! I was greeted at the Tin House Patagonia Hostel by Pato, Laura and David. Those three would represent my Patagonian family while I volunteer at their hostel ... read more

On Tuesday we were up early for our hike from Lake Pehoe to Lake Grey.  The hike was a measly 11 km so we were looking forward to it after our insane hike the day before.  It took us about 4 hours to complete the hike, which was mostly through a valley and some forest.  It was relatively flat compared to the French Valley, but harder than we and our sore feet, ankles, knees, and hips had anticipated. We had lunch at Lake Grey and waited for a boat to arrive to take us to see Grey Glacier and then to bring us back to the landing.  There was a natural landing for the boat's dingy, so we hopped in and boarded the bigger boat.  Seeing pieces of glacial ice floating in the water got us ... read more

We were up early this morning to begin our first trek, during which we will complete most of the W Circuit. We took the coach to a port on Lake Pehoe (pay-ho-ay) and took an hour long ferry across.  The lake is a beautiful milky blue glacier lake.  Its like nothing I have ever seen before and, I'm sure, quite cold.  We were served hot chocolate and cookies, an unexpected but welcome treat. We dropped our dry bags (with toiletries and clothes for the next day) off at the Refugio (hostel) on the other side of the lake and started hiking the Valle Frances (French Valley); it is our guide's favorite trek - it was HARD.    We hiked 19 kilometers - much of which was steep - in the Patagonian mountainside.  It was amazing.  Because of ... read more

We have been in the Torres del Paine National Park for quite a few days and out of contact. At the moment we are in Puerto Natales waiting for a bus to El Calafate and then El Chalten. That's the geography, now for the exciting part!! We are travelling everywhere by bus, along unmade roads for the greater part of the journeys. On our way into the park, we drove from rather flat areas into the very dramatic mountainous and lakes area - some of the edges of the lakes have heavy salt deposits and look incredibly white! We saw flamingos in the lakes - not what I expected! But the mountains became more dramatic, the roads more twisting and then a gaucho stopped the bus - He rode alongside the bus and waved, the driver ... read more

Moin! Nach dem sehr geilen Trekking am Fitz Roy, wollte ich auch noch das andere Wander-Mekka in Patagonien mitnehmen. Nationalpark Torres del Paine in Chile. Also haben wir ... read more

Okay, well not quite camping in the wild, we were in a designated campsite, but still very much outdoors and away from the simple little things in life like a bed. We left El Calafate early in the morning and travelled for several hours to reach the Argentinian/Chile border where we had a relatively easy and quick crossing given that we were on a bus with 40 or so other people. We arrived in Puerto Natales in the afternoon only to change to another bus which would take us to Torres del Paine. It was in Puerto Natales that we met Christian, our local guide for the next three days. After another two hour bus ride we arrived at the entrance to Torres del Paine where we transferred to a smaller bus to take us to ... read more
