After a long day travelling we arrived back to the nearest we've had to home on this trip - The Pink House in Puerto Montt. It was late and Francisca just handed us the key and we went off to bed having confirmed that they’d arranged for us to hire a car the following morning. Karim turned up the next morning to take us to his offices in town where we signed all the papers and drove away in a Renault Samsung....no, I’ve no idea either! I say we, but actually H had agreed to do all the driving – I’m not a big fan of left hand drive cars or crazy Latin American drivers! H had put a GPS map on his phone and iPad for us to use but the iPad one appeared to ... read more

March 2 - Monday - Chiloe Island - Castro Looked very threatening today so wrapped our suitcases in shower curtains which we purchased from the supermarket. (Our luggage travels in the back of the open ute.) There was quite a bit of rain as we drove to Puerto Montt, where we caught the ferry to Chiloe Island. The trip took about half to 3/4 hour. We saw many of seals playing in the water as we crossed. We headed off, driving around a portion of the coast - quite different from the lake edges we had been seeing. We were watching out for a picnic spot, but found none, so ate lunch from the back of the ute. The countryside was very beautiful. Drove to Punihuil and did a 1/2 hour trip out to view penguins. ... read more

We drove to Ancud from Puerto Montt in our rental car. We had to cross to the island on a car ferry. We were lucky the ferry was there when we pulled up. We took a few pictures from the ferry. It was an easy drive until we got to Ancud. The small town is full of two way streets that turn into one way streets. I am driving and I go the wrong way on a one way street. A taxi driver waved me over and asked what address we were trying to find. He then directed me to the correct street. We find our Airbnb rental, it is an apartment with a great view of the bay. That night at dinner our taxi driver was eating dinner with his family a few tables away. ... read more

... read more

... read more

Valdivia is situated on the west coast at the point of convergence for three rivers and is described as the most important university town in Southern Chile, with a strong emphasis on the arts and as such has a good, young vibe. The town was strongly influenced by the immigration of Germans in the mid 19th century, who brought with them the love of cake, which is still known by its German name "kuchen" and beer. So worth a visit in our eyes. Unfortunately, it was raining when we arrived in Valdivia, which was quite a surprise for us as we had not really had any significant rain since we left the UK over two months ago. Despite the rain, we spent an enjoyable day or two in Valdivia, visiting the odd museum (having cake of ... read more

Castro and the churches on the island of Chiloe--Tuesday, December 3, 2013 We got up early this morning, since we needed to meet for the tour at 7:45. We had booked a ship excursion since we couldn’t find a private tour that was as comprehensive. As we crossed the Lido pool area on our way to breakfast, we realized that elves had visited the ship while we slept and decorated for Christmas with a tree, Santas, swags, and wreaths. Our ship was anchored way out in the bay and it was obviously we would need to tender into the dock to catch the bus. As we came into the dock, we could see Black-headed Swans swimming in the bay and we were told that the seagulls flying overhead were Brown-hooded Gulls. It was quite obvious that ... read more
