A cup of tea in bed! We cannot even remember when we last had this delight. We were even able to have cereal and milk for breakfast. It was wonderful. More chilling out, enjoying not having to move on and sitting on a sofa. We then went and explored Castro, its Plaza de Armas, arts market (where we invested in a very thick jumper each for warming us up after our planned treks over the coming weeks), and the delightful walk by the sea looking at the stilt houses that give Castro its uniquness. Castro is the 'capital' of the island and one of the oldest cities in Chile, along with Santiago and La Serena and is the island's cultural and historic heartland. In the evening we devoured a jacket potato with tuna mayo. These ... read more

Greetings! Travelling does funny things when you are away from who you know, and what you are used to seeing... through out this trip we are always seeing people and meeting people and saying that this person reminds of this person and so on... Todays entry is going to be about our past 10 days to two weeks in country number 5 on our excellent adventure... Chile! And more specifically how we were somehow able to travel to 7 towns/cities/villages in about 8 days... and how each and every place was incredibly beautiful for different reasons and how many of them reminded us of a different section of that country we love and really miss so much.. Canada! We had to bid a sad farewell to our favourite place so far on the trip (mendoza) to ... read more

We were at Chiloe Island for the last few days, which was not quite within our plans. Heard from others that it´s very nice here, so we decided to come and take a look for ourselves. Chiloe Island is an archipelago at the southern part of Chile with rolling green hills and friendly people. Not forgetting their fantastic seafood. Arrived in Castro, the capital of Chiloe. We have very little info abt the place and hop on to the nearest accomm we could see after we arrive at the bus terminal. The hostel is run by a local Chilean, which means we can't really communicate with her. But the best part of it is we have a cable TV in our room. We glued ourselves to the TV everynight, switching from HBO to AXN to Animal ... read more

Greetings all, Last weekend I took my first real trip in Chile. I met up with three other Fulbrighters and we headed to the island of Chiloé. Chiloé is the large island you can find off the coast, about 2/3 down the country. It is officially in Patagonia, so I have met my longstanding goal of getting to Patagonia. The island is steeped in its own folklore, including such myths as a beautiful woman who appears and dances on the beach; if she faces towards the sea when she finishes dancing, there will be a bountiful year, if she faces towards land, there will be famine. The most exciting of the various supernatural beings is Trauco, the most repulsive and powerful gnome to ever walk the land. With just a gaze, he can kill a man. ... read more

GERMAN VERSION FURTHER DOWN / DEUTSCH WEITER UNTEN Chiloé is probably one of the poorest areas in Chile. It´s an Island south of Puerto Montt and it´s known for its wooden Churches and its bad weather:-) No kidding, it rains 200 days a year. But lucky me, the sun was shining (more or less) for the whole time I was there (or lets say, it wasn´t raining. Or at least not for long). For this bit I am just going to put some pic´s in so you can get an idea (am getting a bit tired and running out of stories)... By the way, the wooden churches are covered with corrugated sheet iron (which is a real sin!!) in order to protect the wood from the moisture GERMAN Chiloé ist wahrscheinich eine der aermsten Gegenden in ... read more

After doing 2 days of kayaking in Bariloche...yeah I finaly control the eskimoroll now. I relaxed a bit in the city in the mountains....before I started to make my way back to Chili....Guess I was lucky with my ride, the car that stopped had to go to the same place as I wanted to go...so 4 hours later and 2 times the paperwork at the boarder I was back in Chili. there I found out that Hitchhiking even works with two guys (and two great backpacks). I met an American Guy there when freecamping at the lake side, and together we went to a Nat. Park to hike a couple days along vulcano Osorno and some beautiful lakes and mountains. days later I made my way to Chiloe, an Island a bit smaller than holland do ... read more

We've covered a lot of territory since the last blog. After leaving Bolivia and crossing the border into northern Argentina, we made our way south, then took a left turn back across the Andes into Chile, thus missing out the boring northern desert. We´ve now travelled down to the island of Chiloe. A note from the English version of the local guidebook may shed some light on this remote spot. The mythology section describes a fearsome creature called the Fiura: ´Repugnant women, horrible ogly of small size, foul-smelling breath live in the forests near to the "Hualdes", she is coquette, swim in the falls and she comb her hair with the crystal rack, wearing address with many colors, and after the bath she seat in the sea grass nud by hours. Is the female of evil, ... read more

The thin strip of south american land that faces the thundering Pacific ocean is Chile. That's where I am. What's it best known for? Stealing part of Bolivia's border and its access to the sea, Augusto Pinochet and his deadly rein of power, Salvador Allende and his sad demise, the atacama desert of the north, the once world-renowned seaport of Valparaiso and the stunning landscapes of the south... From Mendoza, I arrived in the Capital Santiago after a few uncomfortable hours on another bus. I say without shame that long-distance buses are now starting to really get up my nose, really piss me off, drag me down, raise my blood pressure and hurt my neck. Apart from that everything's hunky dory or todo bien as the latins would say. I think it might be time ... read more

... read more

It´s been a long time since I´ve had access to a computer because Nick and I flew from Santiago straight down to Punta Arenas, so that we could visit the Torres del Paine national park. It really was so stunning that I kept saying "This is so beautiful" over and over again! It had everything - HUGE glaciers, turquoise lakes, and beautiful mountains, including the eponymous ´Torres´(towers). I´m afraid that I´ve hardly got any photos on my digi camera but at least you get a vague idea of it. You´ll have to wait to see the rest when they´re printed from Nick´s SLR. We camped in the park for 4 days, in forests and alongside the lakes and glaciars. It´s truly an unforgettable place. Enough of my spouting, just go there if you can! We´re now ... read more
