So, it's into Chiloe. An island 250km long and 80km wide. Sitting just of off the coastof Chile it feels like I am heading for the final frontier. I am heading for the principle town of Castro. I haveno room booked and hope to save some cash by a walk in. Leon at La Ruca has also given me some recommendsIIt's funny yesterday I woke up and the time on my chile cell phone was one hour faster than my I-touch. Thought it was an internal error on my mp3 player and set the correct time by the clock on the wall. Into town and when talking to Tom he was an hour late meeting Krista for lunch. ... read more

You know music is probably the only art form that can touch every emotion. You hear a tune and sometimes you can recall every little detail in your life at that time. Some radio shows, Desert Island Discs for example, have survived for years in this premise. Songs that make you laugh, that can make you cry, remind you of your first kiss, and the first time you made love, (of the only time if you were put off by the whole messy business).People name their children after their pop idols, cry openly when they pass away and sing their favourite songs in karaoke bars around the world. From early man ... read more

Day 49 - Monday 28th November Both had a bit of a rough night due to that Chinese meal last night (should have known better), but in a better frame of mind I think it is hard to go from having so much happening to nothing. Slow start to the day and we weren’t out the door till 11, which was bad of us when we initially had things to do. First on the agenda was getting money from the bank followed by chasing up some bus tickets out of town. We are planning on moving onto Puerto Montt in Chile on Wednesday and the woman and a travel agent yesterday said we could only get them from the bus terminal located 3km out of town. Before jumping in a taxi we decided to walk down ... read more

Back on the bus again for the trip down to Chiloe. We picked Cruz del Sur for the journey. As usual it was an overnight bus from Santiago. A bloke on the bus swapped seats with us – we had left it a bit late and ended up with seats all over the shop. Not he best for a night bus – you really want to be drooling on the shoulder of someone you know and trust at 3 in the a.m. He thought we were Germans again – not my fault, that's for sure, with my Norman red beard and curly hair and Asian eyes. It was Klaire's fault. Her blonde looks, compounded by her reply in Deutsch. We slept, or tried to – by this time the night buses were truly becoming stale. We ... read more

... read more

Chiloe is a huge island right off of Chile. We had to take a ferry to get there. Our first stop in Chiloe was the national park. We camped at the front of the park because we arrived to lake to do any real hiking the first day. We slept well then were off on a long, grueling 35 mile hike. Before we left we got directions from two different people and if anyone knows anything about Chile you could probably guess the directions where not the best. The rangers told us to go along the road for 4 km then the beach for 11km then up a hill and you will find the refugio. You cant miss it they both said. We were both thinking ok along the beach this should be a nice easy ... read more

Our time spent in Argentine and Chilean Patagonia was muy precioso (amazing), but after 12 days of mostly trekking, camping and being quite smelly, we were both ready for a more cultural and chill experience. Chiloé was not originally on our radar as a place to visit, but after booking a cheap flight to Puerto Montt (originally just to catch a Bariloche-bound bus), reading about the archipelago of Chiloé and realizing it’s proximity to Puerto Montt, and finding an affordable car to rent for a few days (something very hard to come by in South America), we were sold. Chiloé is an archipelago located in the Pacific Ocean and comprised of more than 40 minor islands, just off the Chilean coast. The main island is about 60 miles long and 30 miles wide, while the surrounding ... read more

Our official first leg of the journey home was through the island of Chiloe, the second largest island in South America. This journey was supposed to last 6 hours until we reached the southernmost city of the island, Quellon. We believed that the island was connected to the mainland by a bridge, but as we were driving south, the bus jumped on a ferry. As we continued our journey we found out that Quellon was a port city with nothing to do so we decided instead to spend the night at Castro, the island’s capital. As soon as we arrived we knew there was something special about the island. Back when the Spanish conquistadores where colonizing the region, they were unable to do so in Chiloe because of fierce resistance from the natives. The island finally ... read more

I am haunted by reggaeton music. Even in the early hours of morning, under my bedsheets, within a room on the second story, in an old droopy house at the bottom of the world, and through a hard riving rain, I can still he hear the signature thrum of base. It’s the base that always finds me, the other parts - horns and synth and voices - drowned out by my surroundings. But the base survives, the redunant boop chee bop chee, boop chee bop chee conjuring images of a mop-headed child pounding on an overturned trashcan. That child is now smiling at me cruelly from some fleshy hollow of my mind. That child stands in a patch of yellow grass before a crusty wooden fence, thumping that can over and over and over, boop chee ... read more

So, I apologize for the delay in writing over the last few weeks. I have been without internet for large periods of time and I feel every time I sit down to write in my blog, I end up trying to catch up on things and loose track of my time...so here it goes. After we left the beautiful weekend in Pucon, we headed South on a bus to Puerto Varas. We had attempted to book a hostel in advance but in our haste, forgot to ask where the actual location of the hostel was...So, we realized pretty close to our late arrival in Puerto Varas that it was 40 KM from the town...no good. We were able to find a hostel in town thanks to the lonely planet, but only after figuring out the local ... read more
