A few days after our last trip to Coquimbo, we came back again as there were still a few landmarks I hadn't seen yet. The first was the brand new Coquimbo football stadium. This was the same stadium which Carla came to in December to watch the a Woman's Under-20 World Cup game. The Under-20 world cup was recently staged in Chile and Coquimbo had the stadium paid for them by just making an application to the Chilean Football Association who seem to be spending a lot on new stadiums with (I think) maybe a view to one day hosting the World Cup. It's certainly a beautiful stadium for a Chilean 2nd division side.
Our 2nd stop was the Coquimbo Mohammed VI Mosque. This Mosque was built as the mayor of Coquimbo (at the time) was apparently bff's with Mohammed VI (a Moroccan prince) so he built the mosque out of love for his friend, and obviously to promote inter cultural understanding and better knowledge. The Mosque is a beautiful building that is viewable from most of Coquimbo and from along the La Serena beach and gives a great view of Coquimbo/La Serena from the perimeter.
Although the view is even better from our 3rd stop, the Coquimbo Millennium Cross.
The Millennium Cross ('Cross of the Third Millennium' to be exact) is a massive structure visible on Coquimbo hill from miles around and is one of the largest religious symbols in South America. We paid to get into the monument but this allows you to visit the museum inside plus take the elevators half way up the monument and then right the way to the top which allows you to see pretty much the whole of Coquimbo and La Serena.
It was good to come and visit all these monuments and to get a proper look at Coquimbo as last time I was here it was one of my biggest regrets that we didn't come and visit the Millennium Cross especially as it is one of the most visible sights from La Serena beach, which to be honest is where we spent a lot of our time on the 2005 trip. It was especially good to get this trip done as we were leaving La Serena soon to head to Rengo before heading off to Easter Island and the south of Chile.
