Korte indruken:
-Lago Chaxa: serene rust, vulkaangesteente en zout
-Lago Miscanti: schitterend, groot meer, rust, fotogeniek
-Lago Miniques: meditatief, rust, vicunas
Lonely planet:
Reservas Nacional Los Flamencos:
This sprawling reserve encompasses seven geographically distinct sectors south and east of San Pedro de Atacama, and encloses many of the area’s top attractions. Conaf maintains a Centro de Informacion Ambiental at the
ayllu (small indigenous community) of Solcor, which is located 2km past San Pedro de Atacama’s customs and immigration post on the road to Toconao.
Laguna Chaxa:
The jagged crust of the Salar de Atacama looks for all the world like God went crazy with a stippling brush. But in the midst of these rough lifeless crystals is an oasis of activity: the pungent Laguna Chaxa, about 25km southwest of Toconao an 65km from San Pedro, is the reserve’s most easily accessible flamingo breeding site.
Three of the five known species (James, Chilean and Andean) can be spotted at this salt lake, as well as plovers, coots and ducks. Sunrise is feeding time for the birds and is the best time to see them. It’s also gorgeous at sunset.
Laguna Miscanti & Miniques:
Shimmery high-altitude lakes dot the altiplano and make for long but worthwhile excursions from San Pedro. From a junction 3km south of Toconao, Ruta 23 heads 46km south toward the village of Socaire, which has a pretty colonial church with a cactus-wood ceiling, and a remarkable density of Inkan terraces.
The road then climbs 18km to an eastbound turnoff leading to the glittery-blue-sweet-water lakes, Miniques and Miscanti, watched over by snow-touched volcanoes. The smaller Laguna Miscanti is a high-Andean flamingo breeding site and visitors are kept at bay when the birds are breeding. Rejoining Ruta 23 about 15km south of the turnoff, the road heads eastward past more salt lakes, including Laguna Tuyajto, to the Argentine border at Paso de Lago Sico (4079m).
Socaire is 100km from San Pedro, and the lagunas are 120km distant at 3400m.
Folder Laguna Chaxa:
Soncor is a lake and damp terrain system,
located to the eastern sector of Atacama Salt Lake, at a distance of app. 62km from San Pedro de Atacama and 24km from Toconao town. It has a surface of 5016,7 hect. It is protected by the National Reserve Los Flamencos.
The Atacama Salt Lake is located at an elevation of 2300m over sea level and has a surface of app. 320.000 hect. In its surface salt crusts are visible, these are caused by the constant accumulation of crystals produced by the underground water evaporation of heavy saline load. This process of evaporation creates different morphologies: chloride crusts form a great toughness with flowers of up to 70cm high, transition crust of chloride produce polygonal structures and sulphate crusts give birth to plane and dry surfaces.
Water appears from the Andes in the Salt Lake surfaces, this originates hydric systems made up by a group of lacustrine bodies of low depth, joined by natural channels. In Soncor, two lacustrine systems that could meet in winter are distinguished: Puilar which is closer to the mountain chains, formed by lakes of big size and a system that give name to Soncor, which joins the Lakes Burro Muerto, Chaxas and Burros Negros.
These
systems have a scarse depth and the muddy state makes the life of many microscopic shapes of unicellular algae and micro invertebrate possible. This constitutes the food of the flamingoes and other fauna of the sector.
