We soon settled back in Putre in Chakana mountain lodge and having been a wee bit stagnant for some time we decided on another trek, John decided it was time for me to learn how to repel, Oh lordie! We climbed a nearby "hill" (my arse Mallorey would have been proud of me) Again I am reminded how I love to trek but just don't get the same satisfaction from climbing, Perhaps I am spoiled and not at all versed on the gratification of achieving such heights (pardon the pun). We reached the top much to my amazement and tried to find a spot to tie off the anchor (I hope I'm getting the repelling jargon correct) I was doubtful of my abilities but decided I needed to "cowboy up" and just go for it, We ... read more

Another sleepless night, I am tired and irritable, Breakfast, then I inspected my feet from Sunday when they blistered badly, still a little raw so I cleaned them put Sangre de Drago on the wounds and covered them with second skin and tape, boots on and off we went. We started at the hot springs with the intention of climbing colorful mountain about a 6-8 hour climb. It was arduous from the beginning and I was feeling the altitude immediately, when we reached the top of the first mount the views were gorgeous, We climbed across the range which was difficult and put a lot of pressure on the knees, I was breathing hard, John was ascending like a mountain goat, I on the other hand resembled a lame baby elephant. We had been on the ... read more

May 10th Another sleepless night, regardless of beer and wine the previous evening, neither of us slept, the altitude was kicking our arises, Got up and had another lovely breakfast, so nice to have good coffee in a warm homely kitchen. Today we decided to take a look at Parque Lauca, one of the highest national parks in the world, we certainly weren't disappointed………. Franklin our guide picked us up about 9am, we packed a lunch and took off in a little 4wd. We entered the park and stopped at some caves, They were used for many years by some travelers as a rest stop as they are situated on the side of the road that leads from Bolivia to Chile. Further along Volcan Parinacota came into view, Majestic and enormous it dwarfs everything around it, ... read more

We caught a bus to Putre a wee village 3 hours away from the coast, The journey was cold and after being used to the heat it really chilled me, Its a gradual climb up to 3500 metros and my ears were popping like hells bells. We hit bad fog and could only see a few feet ahead but we kept climbing and eventually emerged above the fog, The valley walls were visible high up but with a blanket of fog in between like marshmallows or cotton wool even though we were experiencing clear blue skies above. In Putre we acclimatized, The hostel or in this case Lodge is Chakana, run by avery friendly welcoming couple who are German/Chilean, the place is pretty, rural and very homely. Its hot as hell during the day when the ... read more

Hi, its Lilach this time - The Salar in Bolivia, which Omer told you all about, was our last stop in Bolivia. From there we have crossed the border to Chile. Our first stop in Chile was a small town called Putre, which is the entry point to Lauca national park. Our first steps in Chile were not very positive - first, there was no place to change money in the border point. It went on, with a big surprise we had regarding reaching Putre. When we bought a bus ticket in La Paz to Putre, no one told us, that actually the bus will drop us on the highway junction leading to Putre (Putre was 4km away from the junction...). Not only that we were in the middle of the highway, there was nothing in ... read more

The chill on the overnight trip across the Altiplano from Uyuni had been intense. Wearing all my clothing and wrapped inside a sleeping bag I still found myself shivering. The gods must have decided I had done something wrong and were punishing me. Could I not just say three Hail Marys and be done with it? We arrived in Oruro at 3 o'clock in the morning. I fielded a couple of questions to the people in the bus station and I resigned myself to braving the ferocious cold of the unheated building and boarding the first bus towards the boarder to explore Bolivia's Sajama and Chile's Lauca national parks. Steve, whom I had met in the Amazon months earlier, dispelled my initial belief that they were over hyped and overpriced. Sitting in the unheated building, waiting ... read more

After spending a few days relaxing in small villages within Chile's Elqui valley, we made our way up to San Pedro de Atacama. This small town in the middle of the Atacama desert is home to a huge tourist industry taking people into the surrounding area. Hitting the ground running, we booked onto a cheap tour out into an area renowned for looking like the moon and called... Moon Valley. While the scenery was stunning the tour was rubbish, so we booked onto a walking expedition of the same area the next day, which allowed us to get into the landscape. Having ticked the 'barren rock and sandy dessert' box, we got up early and headed off to a huge, salt lake that's home to thousands of flamingos. As the sun rose over the water we ... read more

BREATHLESS Since we last wrote we have flown from Cuzco to Arequipa, spent a night there, flown from Arequipa to Tacna, spent about 5 minutes there and caught a taxi to Arica in northern Chile. $40 US for a 50 km taxi ride and the driver handled all the cross border paperwork for us. Arica is a coastal town and fishing its main industry. Birds love fish, and there were thousands of pelicans and cormorants chasing the fish and the fishing boats. We spent a couple of days wandering the black sand beaches, hiring some bicycles one day to have a look further down the coast....In all the years of technological development in bicycle design, the seats are still unbelievable uncomfortable ;-) Got the bus up to Putre last Tuesday. A town of a few ... read more

Hello all once again, unfortunately this entry is going to be slightly more concise than usual as we're very short on time. who would have guessed rural mountain villages weren't the best place to find a reliable, fast and open internet connection? So since we last blogged we took the bus to tacna on the peru-chile border and then took a colectivo across to arica on the other side. It was with a fond farewell that we left peru, connie especially was sad to leave as shes had so much time to know the country and its people. We also didn't immedietly fall in love with chile as arica is not the most charming place and everything seemed to be closed. Oh and we got ouur first gringo shout of the whole trip. We also struggled ... read more
