After leaving La Serena we reached the Atacama desert region where the vegetation dissapears altogether and there's just sand and rock for hundreds of kilometers. The first 3 days from La Serena took us to Copiapo and were still pretty well populated so we didn't have to carry too much food and water. After leaving Copiapo we began the proper desert part, which was a 570km ride to Antofagasta. The ride from Copiapo follows the coast for a while before heading inland and slowly climbing to 2200m before coming back down to sea level at Antofagasta. The climb was really gradual, sometimes the road barely looks like it's going uphill, but being in our second lowest gear told us it definately was! The first 3 days were tough going because of the heat and having to ... read more

This blog entry covers the first half of our trip from Bariloche, Argentina north to Iquique, Chile. We crossed into Chile from Villa La Angostura and then stopped at a river near Puyehue. There we dug out pools in a streambed which filled with natural hot spring water bubbling up from below . We relaxed in the hot springs till the stars came out and then drove on for another hour to Orsorno, where we spent the night. The next day, we drove to La Serena where we stayed in a great hostel and made friends with some of the other travelers from France, Australia, and New Zealand. La Serena is a really nice town but we decided to push on since the town was covered by a cool fog and we were hoping to find ... read more

Blog from Iquique - Antofagasta- Chile After a two night stopover in Arequipa the boys were ready to ride again, even with David on his washed and polished KLR. We left the hotel and headed out of town, rather later latter than planned, for various reasons. Geraldine rode with me out of Arequipa on the way to Tacna, which is the largest Puruvian City before we enter Chile. The Campbell boys, needed more speed than the two up KLR could reach, so they went on ahead to enjoy the sealed highway...well that was the last we saw of them for a few hours. We assumed thay would be at the border when we arrived, but not a sign of them ? So were they that far ahead of us that they got tired of waiting and ... read more

Hello All, I am on the road right now but have a bit of time and found an internet cafe, so I will give you a quick udpate. We left Concepcion and have been heading north for about a week now. We went direct to santiago by night bus and the following morning hitched a ride to valparaiso. We had a full day in valparaiso and i have to say i liked it, except it was pretty dirty. Cool architecture and city planning though. The next day we took off too La serena. We arrived super late and didnt have time to see much except the japanese garden and plaza de armas. The next stop was supposed to be Copiapo but we got there and the hostals were expensive so we kept moving to Antafogasta. Here ... read more

Friday I stand and look up at the Twin Towers looming over me in the night sky. I made it. I am here. This is the end of the world. The Chileans have an affectionate joke that, at the end of the seven days of creation, God looked down and realized he had a bit of desert, beach, mountains, and forest left over. So he decided to just string it all together, tack it on to the end of the world, and call it Chile. Referring to Chile as the end of the world isn't so bizarre considering how isolated it is. The Atacama desert lies in the north as an obstacle to PerĂº, Bolivia, and Argentina. Down the eastern edge of the country, the Andean mountains provide further separation from Argentina. On the west - ... read more

(Oct 22..Sorry guys....this was written, as was the Peru-pre tour, but not published so if you're interested here it is) Being on holidays we lost track of days and dates and thinking that we had only one more day before we flew to Lima we took off early in the morning to Iquique. On the way we stopped off to see the geoglyphs at Los Pintados which are truly fabulous. Pintados is located west off of the PanAmericana Hwy and south of Iquique. Here are found literally hundreds of 'glyphs on several hillsides. About 350 figures are scratched into the hills. No one seems to know what they all mean. Another drive through, yet more desert. Iquique is founded at the base of huge mountain range and a huge sand dune and if you look down ... read more

Dag 55.

... read more
