After a five hour ferry journey, where we watched penguins and dolphins float by, we arrived in the small and slightly strange town of Chaiten, ready to head down the Carretera Austral. The Carretera Austral is a mainly gravel road that travels around 1240 km south from Puerto Montt to Villa O'Higgins, connecting up some of Chile's most isolated settlements. We knew bus services did exist on the road, but they apparently could be few and far between and very busy, so we were told only try to travel this route by public transport if we have a lot of time and patience. Itinerario: 09/02 - Coyhaique - Reserva Cerro Castillo (60 kms, asfalto sin arcén) 10/02 - Reserva Cerro Castillo - Puerto Ingeniero Ibañez (56 kms, asfalto sin arcén) Los siguientes días fueron bastante buenos, incluso salió el sol algún día. En las bajadas largas había que abrigarse pero el resto del día se podía ir bien sobre la bicicleta. Salimos tarde de Coyhaique porque intentamos comprar los billetes del barco que cruza el Lago General Carrera desde Puerto Ingeniero Ibañez hasta Chile Chico, pero al ser domingo estaba la oficina cerrada. Salimos aproximadamente a las 16:00 de Coyhaique después de hacer varias reparaciones e instalar la parrilla nueva y llegamos al anochecer a la Reserva Cerro Castillo, donde nos quedamos en el camping junto a la cabaña del guardaparque. Desde que volvimos a Chile a través del Paso Internacional de Futaleufú el tiempo empeoró y las nubes y la lluvia nos han estado acompañando. Pasamos una noche en Futaleufú tras el paso por la frontera y comprobar que apenas podíamos avanzar por el viento. Aprovechamos para ir a un rodeo y ver cómo los gauchos jineteaban las vaquillas y luego las enlazaban, lanzando el lazo a las patas delanteras para hacerlas caer y quitarles el cinto que habían utilizado para cabalgarlas. Tomamos alguna cerveza y probamos unas deliciosas sopaipillas con pebre. Al día siguiente fuimos desde Futaleufú hasta Villa Santa Lucía, nuestro primer contacto con la carretera austral. Puerto Chacabuco is located at the head of the Aisén (sometimes Aysen) Fjord and is the main port of the region. The Aisén Fjord, formed by a glacier, is about 70 km (42 miles) long and provided access to the port. Until 1991, the main port was Puerto Aisén, four miles upstream on the Aisén River, which silted up with the eruption of the Mount Hudson volcano and erosion from heavy logging in the mountains.
