In Hotel Lazuli the night before
We ran out of booze so it was an early night! probably for the best. Finally got a chance to sit down and tell you all about Harry and Marina´s wedding!
We arrived in Sao Paolo city on Friday 20th in the afternoon. Coming in on the plane was amazing- the city is huge, with massive skyscrapers. Its one of the busiest and most populated cities in the world. When we arrived, we all got something to eat in a great Italian Restaurant. The whole gang was there- Dave, myself, Kev, Emma, Pedro, Rory, Jessie, Rudy and Cintia. We got a transfer to our hotel (Hotel Lazuli) which was organised by Harry and Marina. The bus company seriously underestimated the amount of luggage we would have so we kind of piled everything in as best we can!
That night at the hotel we stayed in the ´bar´which ran out of beer and took ages to bring our food. But we had wine instead! Hung out there till about 12 (when all the booze ran out- we were down to a bottle of random stuff that Geraldine and Barry (Harrys siblings) brought back).
Got up on the saturday- the ceremony wasnt till 4:30 so we had the whole morning to get to the hairdressers
etc. Only problem was it was LASHING rain. This was beyond what i´d seen in Ireland. Proper monsoon rain. And the wedding was supposed to be outside! Didnt bother with the hairdressers in the end, it would have been a waste of money!
When me and Emma were getting ready, the lads went over to the garage to get water and came back with a football. A barbie football no less. It caused many fights (peter insisted he scored a goal but the lads say it hit the post). So instead of going to the gym the lads hit the bar instead and played barbie ball.
We headed off to the wedding just before 4 (on a bus that Harry and Marina organised for us). The venue was spectacular (check out the photos!). It was all under a huge gazebo. The ceremony was delayed because some people got stuck in Sao Paolo the rain was that bad.
The ceremony was lovely even though we didn´t understand most of it! After the ceremony we had finger food, and ran to get seats (there were no seating arrangements so it was every man for himself). There was a huge
buffet with all kinds of stuff- Rory wasn´t sure if a particular meat was lamb or beef so he decides to ask the waiter Baaa? or Moo? He got a response of confused looks.
There was a great cocktail bar with loads of different kinds of Caiparinhas ( a cocktail made with Cachaça- a brazilian sugar cane drink). We had plenty of those! There was a great DJ aswell. The toast is less formal than in irish weddings, everyone just gets onto the dancefloor with a glass of bubbly and does a big toast.
We had a great dinner and got up to dance, when the music stopped. I guy started to play the ukelele and sing, and next of all a line of samba drummers paraded into the place. Everyone went nuts! We had a dance off with one of the Brazilian girls- she caught Harrys sister Geraldine looking at her boyfriend, and its Brazilian tradition that the girls have a dance competition. In the Favela funk parties, you have to go right down to the floor and you can´t get up till someone says you can. I tried this with Cintia, and ended up straining my
calf muscle.
When the samba music stopped, the dj came back on. Everyone was up dancing. The lads then had a pillow fight which Harry had to stop!
We left the venue about 3:30 and Barry brought a load of beer back. I went to bed, but most people stayed up to drink the beer. Dave ended up sleeping in with Pedro because I didnt hear him knocking on the door!
We had a great day, it was great to get everyone together. The next day in Sao Paolo was a funny one. Check out Pedros hat in the next blog!
