Let me tell you how we rolled at Ubatubu: we settled down on the beach, carefully oriented our beach towels in order to catch some rays at the proper angle (you gotta do it right: wanna avoid our upper lip staying white under our long noses while the rest of our body is getting a proper tan!), we went for a quick swim, lied down and took a good nap. Later on, we ate ice cream, went for a little jog on the beach (Brazilian style!), tried to do a few push-ups… We went swimming again, then went for a little walk along the shore. We climbed up a hill to enjoy fabulous vistas over the beaches; we picked up seashells, bought a few postcards, read our books… It’s not always easy but someone’s gotta do ... read more

20th April - 24th April Because it was the Easter weekend, pretty much EVERYWHERE was fully booked! I managed to get one night on Ilha Grande, a beautiful island about an hour away from Rio. The hostel overlooked the bay with a gorgeous beach and you can walk through jungle area to get to waterfalls etc. Heard a lot of monkeys too but didnt see any! Shame I could only get one night, but just as I was leaving hundreds of tourists were turning up for Easter so probably a good thing. Took a 5-hour bus journey to Ubatuba which was actually even nicer than Ilha Grande. One beach was this amazing stretch of white sand, where all the surfers go, but then you walk another half hour or so through trees to get to another ... read more

youppyyyyy!! We’re finally in Brazil and loving it!! The beach, the sea, the humidity... the fact that after spending over 3 weeks in an altitude above 3300m walking here is a "peace of cake"... After Bolivia, we’ve spend two more days in Puno before once again we've had to head direction airport and catch a plane... this one was going to take us from Juliaca to Lima from where we've had a booking to Sao Paulo some hours later (7, to be exact... which was more then enough time to fill ourselves up with some alcoholic beverages in the lounge...) Once we landed in Brazil, without hanging around Sao Paulo too long, Asta & I caught a bus to Ubatuba where we plan on spending about a week, before heading direction Paraty and Rio...... read more

After three days at the beach, its finally time for me to get to work.... Pedro´s aunt and uncle have a beautiful house and bed and breakfast in Ubatuba, on the coast between Sao Paulo and Rio, so we went there to take in the beach for a few days between work commitments. Pedro has some cousins our age, so it was fun to just hang out, bum around during the day, and go out at night. Here in Brazil, like in much of the world besides the US, young people typically live at home until they get married, so EVERYONE is around. It´s nice actually, because you always have someone to talk to, do stuff with, eat with, etc. - its like a giant slumber party all the time. Turns out I am bad luck ... read more

In Sao Paulo now after a few days on the coast at a beach in the town of Ubatuba (doesn't the name along just make you want to go there?). We have a beautiful apartment surrounded by a very lush jungle like environment. The beaches here are so postcard white sand beautiful and the water feels incredible to swim in. Stacey and Angelo have been a lot of fun to be with and we have got to do and see a ton of things that I don't think would have been possible if we weren't with a Paulista (person from Sao Paulo). Next week I head off alone again to do some exploring in Brazil. Rose caught a flight today back to Buenos Aires for a couple days and will be back in the States mid ... read more

For the first time in many years, I didn´t need to plan this year´s New Year´s Eve. Being Karene´s guest, I told her I´d be more than happy to just tag along with her and her friends. This meant spending a long weekend in Ubatuba, at her friend´s summer house. Ubatuba is a coastal city between São Paulo and Rio. We left São Paulo Friday afternoon and first made a brief stop in Guarulhos, Karene´s hometown, at her mum´s house. Her aunt was there to welcome us and cooked a delicious lunch and I also got to taste the most exquisite cake ever - bolo de mandioca! Then we picked up Karene´s boyfriend, and after a 4-hour car ride we finally arrived in Ubtauba, Lázaro´s beach to be more precise - as you will see from ... read more
