Something I missed from a few days prior to this was I saw a guy get creamed on a peddle bike, he was done for, right in the middle of a busy street in Buenos Aires. He managed one last grasp and collapsed. People really need to take more care when driving or crossing streets, South American drivers are the craziest i've seen so far.
The rest of the week in Buenos Aires was relaxing for me, I got into a bit of a routine in the city, knew where I liked to eat and what I liked to do there. The last night there I decided to have a few extra drinks and ended up getting risiculously drunk, this shouldn't happen in a foreign environment. I had eaten a few cheesburgers and drank a bottle of rum which is a recipe for disaster. I ended up pulling a smoke bomb, didn't say goodbye to anyone and had to get the cab to pull over on the drive home so I could puke, sweet.
Saturday was a good day, I was ready to get out of a big city and we booked a bus to Florianapolis, Brazil. Florianapolis is
an Island in the South of Brazil with 42 beaches, pretty much heaven here. The bus took a total of 24hrs end to end, when I got on the bus my impression was it was 12hrs, it wasn't til a French guy named Bruno strated talking to me did I realize that the actual trip was 24hrs. It was ok for me because I like long drives and had a first class bus seat. The buses are awesome here and its actually bearable riding this long when you are rocking first class (it's 20$ more).
Finally got to Florianapolis, the weather was just cold enough to make the beaches not good. When we got to the Hostil we booked, named the Submarino recommended by Dave, the owners were rolling up dubes for all the patrons and hosting a barbeque, always a nice welcome. This hostil was alot of fun, huge bbq pit, really relaxed group of people and cheap as hell. A 50+ Aussie guy in my room would wake up at 3pm, saunter around, then kill a bottle of vodka that costs 5$ and pass out til the next day. He told me he was in Brazil on
business, when I prodded further he said something about Solar Energy but that was it, gotta get off the vodka first I think.
It turned out to be perfect weather for an eco hike through towns only accesible by boat. Most people are too lazy to do this so we got directions to a waterfall that is a big tourist thing and set out on a fascinating hike. The entire trip was supposed to lead us to the waterfall and then to a water taxi that would take us back to the part of the island we were on. 7 hrs later we were at the waterfall, dead tired, we had gotten lost. A stray dog, which there are many of in South America, followed us the entire way. Good thing I know so much about survival, i've seen every episode of dual survival, and we got back on track. The waterfall wasn't anything special, I dove in the base of it and the handful of people there thought I was insane, but it really wasn't that big of a deal. People don't know what cold is until you live in Calgary for a winter.
The next day
was more of the same weather wise, so we recruited Nina and Bruno to come with us. This time we knew the way and had another great hike with the same dog joined us. It's always nice to discover something first, which is what we did the day before, I like sorta hosting and leading the way. This time we stopped for lunch at a little town and ate fish and rice, the fish was caught that morning by the son and fried by the mom and dad. Really great lunch. Hiked the trail back again.
That night I cooked up a feast for a bunch of people, hamburgers, salads, churizos...
Made a decision that the motto was chase the sun for the rest of my time travelling, and since Florianapolis weather was supposed to be shitty the next few days we bought a bus ticket to Sao Paulo, the second biggest city in the world. Sao Paulo is on the way to Rio and another 12hrs. I really didn't want to be in Sao Paulo, it wasn't what I was looking for, but Bob had bad intentions and a plan so I agreed.
Got into Sao
Paulo early in the morning, checked our bags at the hotel and walked around. We were in a district called Paulista, found a gym and they wanted 50$ Us per day, we kept walking and found another one, they said the same thing but we talked them into 50$ for 3 days. Nice gym, way better than i've ever been to before, it was called runners club and it was in one of the financial districts, they had everything.
The food is much healthier in Brazil, heavy on the fresh fruit, 3 times a day since I got to Brazil i've had pineapple and orange mixed into a single juice with the freshest fruit and 2 hollowed out coconuts, since i've been to rio, with a straw for fresh coconut water and an acai frozen cup.
We went out Thursday night and it was the new best night of my life.
Friday didn't do much, went to a pub and I went to bed early.
Saturday en-route to Rio at 1pm bus.
