the world famous ipanema beach
saturday afternoon and its a religion here to go down the beach for almost every brasilean to top up that golden tan dont remember any more words to the barry manilow song but i had a great time in rio, if you can hlp with the words fill me in...
I arrive in the metropolis that is Rio for a week of sightseeing in probably the worst week of weather for a long time to hit this city for a few months. It is good to be travelling so light for a couple of weeks since I have left my main rucksack in SAO PAULO with my friends there.
Upon arrival, I head for the copacabana which is the place to find relatively inexpensive accomodation and safe because fellow travellers and my travel book indicate that this is one of the worst cities for violence against tourists along with Caracas in Venezuela and Lima in Peru. I find a hostel room here for 30 brasilean reales per nite which entails sharing a dorm with three other people......a chilean, brasilean football supporter of Palmeras here for the game at the maracana and a DJ from Belgium. This is the first tme since Cartagena in Colombia and El Salvador that I have had to share a room with other travellers, something I
copacabana beach with view to sugar loaf
one of the main beaches here in rio which is less busy than the weekend when it is like sardines in a tin have not been particularly keen on because of my ´missing´ clothes from my last hostle visit. Anyway, besides the hostels there is not a lot of cheap other alternatives in this city which is definately the most touristy place I have visited in 8 months along with Antigua in Guatemala and almost everywhere in Costa Rica.
I wait for the weather to turn for the better before I decide to pass time seeing the famous sites that RIO has to offer including Copacabana & Ipanema beaches, Sugar Loaf mountain and the very close to being a seventh wonder of the world....Statue of Christ on corcavado mountain which overlooks the whole city. This is because I want some good fotos to remember the occasion by. I am overwhelmed by the sheer number and variety of tourists here in Rio & especially on my afternoon visit to the Christ Statue on Corcavado mountain. There are Germans, Italians, Spanish, French, the obligatory Japanese all laden with the latest modern technology for capturing that magical moment on film or video. The train journey up to Corcavado is different with a braslean band playing in every carriage on the 30 miunte trip and you
sunset over conglomerate hotels in copacabana
sun setting behind the rich hotels that line the touristy copacabana a bit like benidorm or miami for me can see from the other pictures on the Jesue Christ statue blog that I managed to jump in on the action.
After a few days here in Rio, I have decided that the Cariocas from Rio are by far the most image and body conscious people that I have come across in my life, much more than Miami, Colombia and every other beach i have visited. The other main annoying fact about the beaches here in Copacabana and Ipanema is that I have never come across as many beach or street vendors before in my travels. At the end of a week or so in Rio, I was not sure which was the most annoying.........the numerous sand flies which means you cannot sunbathe in peace or the numerous people selling copacabana relics and football shirts, etc.
