Day two
We awoke at first sparrow fart in the morning, went downstairs to get some breakfast “Miggers kept telling us to try the brekkie” and we were not disappointed, they provided the good old classics like bacon, eggs and toast as well as exotic fruits and a squillion different kinds of breads etc so a fussy eater like me was not left hungry.
Although the weather was a little hazy we decided to go upstairs to the pool and try to relax a bit, by the time 6months is up we will be hardened backpackers even so we could both do with a bit of chill time, the last year has been rather intense on us both workwise, weddingwise and in preparation for this trip, i was intent on getting burned and Liz was intent of finishing the batteries on her e-reader... roaring success on both counts!
Up on the roof we saw a military parade for Brazilian Independence Day three helicopters flew past the Copacabana bearing the Brazilian flag and there were some warships and then a bloomin’ great submarine!!! Unfortunately I had left the Camera downstairs in our room so i missed the flag bearing
choppers but i went down, got the camera and tripod and managed to snap the sub, some boats and one navy chopper with a dude taking pictures of the crowds below on board.. hah bet he didn’t know i was taking pictures of him taking pictures of people taking pictures of him taking pic... well im sure you get the point.
Once i was suitably pink and Liz had exhausted her e-reader we went back downstairs, i was hungry again and wanted to go exploring along the beach, get some food and get boozed up.
We took a stroll along Copacabana heading towards Ipanema admiring the most extravagant sand castles... they were seriously cool! Also we had noticed the local people were all either fat or very buff, they obviously weren’t expecting me and all my muscles.. i made the guys look puny, we were expecting to see loads of really hot women but again most of them were pretty chunky the only hot girls we saw were young enough to be my daughters and im only 30 so Liz was pleased and has said im allowed out on my own.
All we could find on the beach foodwise was
fried fish... coming from London that did not seem very exotic so we crossed the road and headed back, we stopped at a very lively restaurant and they had us sussed as brits immediately we know this because they gave us an English menu and said hello a lot, i ordered a mushroom pizza and Liz ordered spag bol, they gave us some garlic bread that had been fried then my pizza arrived... again im pretty sure it had been fried... now the mystery of the fat Brazilians was becoming less of a mystery, unfortunately i was not able to finish more than a 3rd of my fried pizza as i had eaten quite a lot of the fried garlic bread and that was enough fried food for me! The waiter kept topping up my beer though which was nice
When we left we carried on towards the hotel and stopped at one of the beach bars offering caiparinias for $3 each (about one pound twenty!!) *an offer we couldn’t refuse* and we saw a street act which was basically a middle aged man dressed as a lady, we couldn’t understand a word of what he was saying but
the locals certainly enjoyed it and were laughing a lot, his props included a mobile phone, a plastic baby and a coke bottle, he also kept tucking himself in, in an amusing way.
Once we finished our cocktails we went back upstairs and as soon as my head hit the pillow i crashed out it must have been no later than 16:00 local time... inevitably i woke up at 03:00 pshhh
