Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) sits on the Corcovado mountain overlooking Rio de Janeiro. Finished in 1931, it has been a fixture of modern Rio and is recognizable world-wide. Brazil has more catholics than any other country in the world. The statue was erected to greet visitors from all over the world to Rio. We took a Jeep Tour to the top with travelers from Ireland, France and Sweden. Pão de Açúcar or "Sugar Loaf" is another spot in central Rio that defines the city. A cable car takes you to a small mountain, then a second takes you to the top of the large one. The view is probably the most amazing thing I have ever seen. You can see all of Rio (Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Centro) and Notoroi. Notoroi is the city across the ... read more

Karen and Tony say Back to Rio to catch a game of fitba at the famous Maracana. The only game that we could fit in to our schedule was Fluminense v Cabofriense, unfortunately we had just missed a huge derby the week before. Nevertheless, we were both happy to go to any match just so we could experience Brazil's temple of soccer. The Maracana can easily accommodate more than 100,000 spectators, however at our match the stadium was no way near full. Even so the fans made their presence known, creating a lively and loud atmosphere that even Tony admits comes close to that of the Tartan Army Roar. One thing we both preferred about the Brazilian game was the endless supply of munchies and refreshments, everything from beer, coffee, crisps, hotdogs, nuts and ice creams. ... read more

Trip 3 to the Maracana!! and it´s a biggy! Fluminense vs Flamengo. Flamengo are Rios biggest and best supported team. Fluminense on the other hand are their arch rivals. Thus the FluFla derby was born! Early on and the atmosphere outside the stadium is electric...we are down with the end with the nense fans, who are already in high spirits singing and chanting outside the stadium. We sit in the shade with a few cold beers because man it´s a scorcher! Inside and it´s back to the familiar grandstand where me and Chris were nearly teargassed last time, told you we enjoyed it! One glance around the stadium and you can see we are easily outnumbered by the Flamengo fans, well I guess we´ll just have to sing louder, so thats what we do! (well we ... read more

Out of the streets and into the Sambadrome! The biggest party in the world is officially in Rio, every year the carnival takes hold of the city, the streets erupt, and in the samba schools preparations are completed and tensions are high for the competition in the Sambadrome. In suburbs and favelas of the city of Rio there are many Samba Schools. Their main purpose is to research and create all the songs, dancing, floats, choreography for the samba competitions. Brazilians take their samba almost as seriously as their football (soccer) - many people have a samba school that they support, wearing the shirts and following the preparations and gossip. Like in football there are several divisions, the top division has 12 schools, the competition that the world associates with the Rio Carnival is the culmination ... read more

4 days of hardcore partying are bound to leave a mark on anybody. By the time Carnaval was over I think it´s fair to say we came, we saw and we got well and truly mullerered. So what do you do when all the partying stops?! Well first you have a meal out with the friends you made in South America, as most of them are now leaving the continent all together. You spend a wee bit of time feeling down and looking back on all the cool things you´ve done, but realising they are over (I blame the depression on alcohol myself!). Finally, you realise you are still in one of the coolest cities on the planet and that you should be taking advantage of every minute you are there!! So just as soon as ... read more

No hej! U nas mala zmiana planow, jeszcze jestesmy w Rio, tzn. do jutra, mamy wyjazd autobusu o godzinie 13.30 i do wodospadow powinnismy dotrzec za jakies 22 godziny. Acha widzielismy jeszcze kolibry!!! ... read more

Well since the last update I seem to have been more or less tagging along with a GAP.COM tour group. Bar the odd few days where I have disappeared. This been to regain my composure/credibility as an independent traveler, something like that anyway. So since leaving the place where my last blog ended I have generally just been clinging to the coast and rarely moving anywhere where I cannot see water. It’s definitely a plan and a half. First off I headed to a place called Jericoacoara, very nice it was too. I had heard a lot about this place so naturally I expected to be disappointed, thankfully I wasn’t. It seemed to have found the fine balance of been a holiday destination but not been overly annoying at the same time. I think this is ... read more

If you guys thought we were rubbish in losing Brad for a day when we first arrived, that was nothing compared to the start of Carnaval day 2. Clearly hungover from the previous nights antics, Chris and I were how shall we say, somewhat less than spritely in the waking up and getting motivated stakes. Now the problem with us two being on Ipanema beach and everyone else being on Copacabana, is that its not easy to contact each other! There are seemingly no internet cafes in Ipanema and dozens in Copacabana! Also the guys don´t have a phone in their apartment, so by the time we manage to email them and get a response we have pretty much chased all over town at 2 hostels and 1 apartment looking for someone we know, all to ... read more
