Hello everyone, we have just arrived in Campo Grande after spending the week in Rio so its about time to give an update on how things have gone so far.... We last updated the blog whilst on Ilha do Mel, which we left as the weather turned pretty nasty, and unfortunately stayed that way in southern Brazil for a week. As we are in the tail end of Brazilian winter it is quite common to be wet, but the rain seemed to follow us up the coast. We headed back to Curitiba on the mainland which was very difficult as the sea was so rough and nearly finished with the whole boat being sick over the side....was not good! followed by the fact that the electricity was down at the bus station and without being able ... read more

Having witnessed a few very large Favela´s (slums) driving through Sao Paulo, and of course, who hasn't seen or heard of the movie City of God, i admit i was very keen to do a tour through a Favela to see it all first hand. We got picked up, our tour guide advised us that although it might seem a little scary, the people are very friendly.. we get to the entrance of a Favela called Rocinha. We jumped on motorbike taxis which took us up the long, steep and winding street to the top, which was a thrill in itself! Our guide advised she would let us know where & when we could take pictures of people. She warned that any young guys with walkie talkies are drug watchers, as all Favela´s are governed by ... read more

Today was the day for Sugar Loaf Mountain. The tour entailed two cable car rides up to the top of a mountain and some smelly European girls that obviously didn't believe in deodorant. The mountain beautiful views of the city. You can make out Christ the Redeemer statue in the distance of some of the pictures. Afterwards, we tried to have high tea at Copacabana Palace, but they stopped serving high tea the previous week. They were very nice and tried to accommodate us with a makeshift afternoon tea. Mike was also very nice to appease Jody and sit through tea with her.... read more

A Remembrance of Things Past - In RIO! In the interest of economizing blog space (since when?!), here’s a summary of all the stuff I did in Rio that was not related to social project. Or at least these experiences were “social projects” of a different sort! Lots of photos - get psyched. So in Rio I stayed in this great little hostel called Botafogo Easy Hostel right near the Botafogo Metro. Botafogo is north-ish of the chic and touristy beaches of Ipanema, Copacabana and Leblon. (Sorry Dad, it’s true). And it has easy access to public transportation. It was adorable, relatively quiet, very clean and awesome, young staff. So any of you who plan to backpack around Brazil - stay here. Tourism Day: Wednesday Checked out the Museum of Contemporary Art in Niterói because it ... read more

Today I went to Rio's two most famous lookout points: Corcovado (Christ the Redeemer - the big jesus) and Pao de Açucar (Sugarloaf mountain). Although it was a little cloudy, the views were great, and you can really appreciate Rio. This is my last night in South America, tomorrow I'm flying back home. See you soon.... read more

I got to Rio after a pretty nice bus ride (I think it was like business class, we got a newpaper and snacks), and found my hostel with no problems. I´ll probably go to a soccer game at the Maracana tomorrow, but you never know. Nothing much else to add, because I haven´t done much today.... read more

so before the craziness of carnaval kicks off thought we should write our first blog, having finally sorted it out!! you must excuse the english its been going downhill ever since we left heathrow, our first slight crisis may have been the crash in heathrow which added a further 3 hours on to our already 12 hour flight, with the pilot reassuring us all not to be alarmed but the wheel carriage of a BA flight had packed up..good good.. 15 hours later we arrived in sao paulo airport ready to get the shuttle bus to our hotel, 3 miles away..no no it was a 50 minute taxi ride away and cost us R$ 102 (about 30 pounds)..seems fairly reasonably but when you've been on a plane for 15 hours and arrive in a south american ... read more
