We got up around 11.30 after another late night and chilled around the hostel until about 3.30. Then we decided to get a taxi rather than a bus to the Rodavario where we had previously bought our bus tickets to Florianopolis. We jumped onto the bus in our seats, these huge reclining things with footrests, pretty comfortable. We sat down and got comfortable for our 18 hour bus trip.... read more

Day 7 So the day started off very early from the night before, Craig and a few others went home and me, Jen, Kerri-Ann and Taryn went to lapa, a place where loads of people hang out, drink, dance, eat and take copious amounts of drugs. We walked up the hill to the outside of a club, bought some beer and started chatting to some locals. they were from a favala, seriously dodgy geezers! So we decided to head home t about 7:30am, it was light. These guys wanted pictures so we took some photos and jumped into a taxi. I grabbed the camera from the from my pocket and gave it back to Taryn and she went thats not my camera, its those guys from the favela, i had only stolen a camera from them! ... read more

Day 6 turned out to be one of the most eye opening days of our lives, we went to the largest shanty town in south America. We went on an organized tour with a few folk from our hostel. Our group of 10 headed into the favela city and our bus pulled over at the bottom of the shanty town. Ok.....so the first bit of we info from our guide.....we are only allowed to take pictures when the guide says its ok, we will be seeing drug lords and murderers so we cant risk exposing them. There are a number of favela towns in rio and they are all controlled at the gate with men with machine guns. Theres a kind of unwritten rule that as a general person born and living in the favela town ... read more

Another good layin, h'm struggling to sleep in shared rooms but i think its just getting used to it! So we head down to Ipanema beach again in the afternoon and are harassed by loads of beach people selling stuff, i got a wicked Brasil flag towel/ sarong. Craig bought and tank top and some others bought tees and and a hammock. We watched the sun set before getting another bus back to the hostel. On arriving back at the hostel we decided to go to the bus terminal. What an experience! The stoned guy that works at reception told us to get bus 125, the bus was outside so 5 of us jumped on and headed to the Rodavario. After about half an hour we look out and we were in some really dodgy area. ... read more

Day 4 After waking up a more respectable time we headed back to Ipanema beach. So we jumped on the bus for another white knuckle ride before chilling on the beach. the waves were huge but not surf material as they were 'Dunkers' according to the Ozzie chicks! After a couple of hours we headed to a bar at the beach and watched some locals playing foot volleyball. There touches were something else! It got to about 4.30 and as we were close to the English bar we thought we'd go and watch Liverpool vs real Madrid. What a waste of time, really boring match but a great result! Craig was happy as he could buy hiss burger and chips and was able to explain no cheese to the English waiter! So we headed back to ... read more

Day 3 After waking at 2pm we decided we would head to the beach in Ipanema, we asked Michelle for the correct bus number, got showed and headed outside into the 34degree heat. The bus runs adjacent to our hostel so it was easy to flag the bus down, each bus has a driver and conductor with a turnstile but some buses only except swipe cards...so we failed with our first attempt to get the bus but the second one that came we paid 2rais and were on our way. We got off a little early in coca and wondered down the beach, the streets are lined with dancers singing and playing the drums etc. We get to Ipanema beach where we chilled for a bit, we then headed to an English bar Tom had read ... read more

Day 694 (21.02.09) Wanting to experience one of South Americas biggest passions, we joined a group from our hostel and our norwegian mates hostel to go out to the Maracana stadium (once famed to have the biggest capacity of any stadium in the world when it was all standing) to watch Flamengo play. As we arrived at the stadium we joined the steady flow of the crowd and stopped for a quick piccie at the sign announcing that the stadium will be used for the 2014 world cup final. We found some seats in and amongst the most passionate fans we could find. The drums were banging and the biggest flags we had ever sean were being waved by fans like their lives depended on it. Although the stadium was only partly full (as a lot ... read more

Day 695 (22.02.09) Today was the day for us to experience all the colour, grandeur and true spectacle of the Carnaval in Rio as we had tickets to the main parade in the Sambadromo. But before we could make it out for the start at 9pm, we still had to drag ourselves out of bed following our previous Carnaval celebrations. Making it up for a spot of brekkie before falling back into bed for a couple of hours we eventually made it outside for a trip to the hippy market in Ipanema where amongst the local artists dsiplaying their work we found a guy whose work we fell in love with. After a while of debating whether we had room for yet another painting we went to ask the artist its cost. Unfortunately just as we ... read more

Day 2 So after am pretty much uninterrupted nights sleep we both wake up at 7.30. After making our way downstairs and chilling in the lounge for while the cook brings out an assortment of brekkie, ham, cheese, fresh rolls, coffee, cake and some very odd tasting fruit juice! It finally gets to around 9am and we decide to hit the beach early. We leave the hostel and start walking... Everything is closed with shutters down. This seems a bit odd being carnival and everything? So we get to Botafogo beach and start walking over the beach, as i approach the sea I dodge a few stray jonny's, bottles and bags. The sea is actually minging! So we head around towards the Copacabana, this must be a top beach Craig I said. So we walked on ... read more
