Today(Sunday) is stand up paddle boarding. We got up around 7:30 and went down about 8:15 for breakfast. Well they don’t do breakfast here until 8:30 … hum… so I logged into the internet. That lasted all of about 3 minutes before it died. Oh well, I’ll get it later. Our guide, Gabrielle stopped by around 9. Off we went. I thought it was to a car, but no, we got to walk about 1.5 miles over cobblestone roads, up a hill, down a hill to where we were going. My knee definitely didn’t like it. We waited about 30 minutes for others that were joining us and then he gave (me) a short lesson. Off I went on the board. Shelly got a good picture or too and then off the board I went. Off ... read more

We landed in Rio around noon and had to go thru passport control and customs. My bag was already on the luggage conveyor when we got there. We waited and waited and waited for Shelly’s. She finally went over to talk with the Delta guy and hum there was a pile of luggage there that had been pulled off early. Her 2 bags were there. We then went thru customs and met our driver. He spoke no English but that wasn’t a problem. We thought the drive to Paraty was 3 hours. Wrong, it took us 4.5 hours. It was a beautiful drive. 90% of the time we were driving in or at the base of mountains, 75 % of the time we were driving along the coast and 15% of the time we were in ... read more

Paraty (“Para-chee”)is a small colonial town around 5 hours by bus from the centre of Rio. Its a place full of cobblestone streets and old buildings from the 1800's and surrounded by tiny coastal islands. Andreia and I went there for the weekend to celebrate her xx birthday (the figure shall remain undisclosed, but lets just say she is looking absolutely fabulous)! Getting to Paraty was, as is becoming custom in Rio, a bit of a drama. Getting to Rodavaria station at 7pm on a Friday night required (a) getting a taxi and (b) it not shafting me. Both quite epic tasks at that day and time. After about 45minutes of hailing taxis at various locations throughout Botafogo, one stopped, agreed to take me to the bus station and we were off, for 2 metres before ... read more

When the others at the hostel decided after carnival to move on, things got lonely. Initially I'd planned to stay in Rio for the whole month and just make action plans ... however I felt like exploring new territory. I went online and searched for places near Rio to visit and up came a town called Parati. The reviews were great so that's where I decided to go next. First stop ... buying a bus ticket which meant taking a trip to the bus station a day before. It's possible to buy tickets online, however if you're not from Brazil the price doubles for online purchases. I asked the person managing the hostel how to get to the bus station and he told me to get a taxi as it wasn't safe to walk there ... ... read more

Sunday 5th January (Odyssey Day 58) Cook group 7 this morning, which is myself along with Donna and Glen. Since we are hoping to make it to Paraty for a late lunch, we won’t have to do anything else cooking wise until leaving Rio. The roads this morning were good roads, very quiet since it is a Sunday. We made it to within just 25km of Paraty at lunch time before having to stop along with the locals as the bridge had washed away last night. A spectacular inconvenience as this meant we had to backtrack through Sao Paulo and add about 350km to our journey. By the time we arrived in Paraty it was well after 2000 instead of 1300. Made for a very long day and even after dropping us off near the hotel, ... read more

After a boat back to the mainland and a 2 hour mini bus journey we arrived in Paraty. Our hostel was right on the beach front and the beach bar had a lot of locals playing music and drinking, straight away this seemed like a really relaxed place. However, the relaxation didn´t last long as Freeman realised he had left his iPhone on the bus leading to a two hour panic trying to hunt the bus down and searching the bus only to find out it wasn´t there, badden! We then showered and headed into the main town of Paraty which is a really old school fishing village with cobbled streets, lots of nice restaurants and a ridiculous amount of liquor stores. We grabbed a hot dog (with mashed potato filling, amazing but strange) and a ... read more

Walked into the main town and then into the old section of town. It is a beautiful place. Old cobbled stone roads which no vechicle are able to travel on. The houses are mainly painted white with coloured trim. We went out onto the bay for 5 hours. Unfortunately the weather was overcast and cool. James went for a swim. Did some snorkling. Said there were lots of fish. Very pleasant day. Got back to the port at 4pm and then went for a walk around the old town. When the tide comes in it floods the old section of town.... read more

In arranging our transfer from Ilha Grande to Paraty, Sag was told one price by the tourist agent before being told another price upon payment. The price difference was relatively meagre, but he refused to pay the new price out of principle which I suppose is fair enough. Which is how we ended up on the public transportation to Paraty. It was a stinking hot day and I was hungover as f*ck, a familiar legacy from the night before. Waiting at a cafe on the beach for our boat back to the mainland, I was finding the heat a bit hard to handle. The first leg was fine - a large ferry that took us from the island to the town of Angra dos Reis. A fairly unremarkable place, a couple crazy men who interacted with ... read more
