Thursday 9thJuly 2015 We came back to Brazil yesterday, back to the same hotel as before in Foz de Iguazu. The weather has been pretty bad all week. It was really lucky that we went on the speedboat last Sunday, because since then, until today, it has been nonstop rain and dark grey skies; pretty dismal. It brightened a bit this morning, although it was still very cloudy, no sunshine, so we went to a bird sanctuary just about a half hours walk from the hotel. The reason that we came back to Foz, was to treat ourselves to a helicopter trip over the falls. We have been both sides and under them, so we thought we would “round off” by flying over them. Such flights are not on offer in Argentina, only here in Brazil. ... read more

Upon seeing the Iguazu Falls for the first time, Eleanor Roosevelt exclaimed “Poor Niagara”! Iguazu is wider than the Victoria Falls and higher than Niagara. Yet when we were children, we learnt all about Niagara and Victoria in school, but we had never heard of Iguazu, which, incredibly, only became a World Heritage Site in the 1980s. When one reads things like this quote, from a former US First Lady, one becomes afraid of disappointment, as we were a bit disappointed with Machu Picchu after all the hype. “Poor Niagara”? Surely not! We visited Niagara many years ago, in 1981, and it has remained to this day, the most outstanding natural world wonder that we have ever seen. Going on the little ... read more

I usually like to follow a chronological order when I write about my traveling but when describing our experience at Foz de Iguacu, one of the New Natural Seven Wonders of the World, I have to start by telling you about the flooding and how the torrential rains made our trip to Iguacu Falls a unique, quasi supernatural experience! So you’ll have to wait to read about the 1100 kilometers my parents and I drove from Sao Paulo to the Iguacu Falls, and how warmly the local cycling community welcomed us (Thank you Warmshower.org!) in Foz de Iguacu. I can’t emphasize enough how incredible, how inconceivably spectacular, the falls looked to us and the few other tourists who happened to be in Parana Province in the early June 2014, after several days of heavy rain in ... read more

Unbelievable!

Another overnight bus (saves on hostels) and we were in Foz do Iguaçu. This had taken 16.5 hours instead of the schedueled 15 for seemingly no reason other than the poor drivers. As we swung into the bus terminal he scraped the front badly but seemed to be claiming it wasn't fault. Safe to say Pluma wasn't our favourite bus company so far - the least luxurious we have experienced for the longest amount of time, but it did a job. I had remembered my jumper and was very grateful for it. Trying to figure out the directions to the Manga Rosa hostel from the international bus terminal proved to be laborious ('head to the North East corner of the bus terminal', I'm neither Ray Mears nor American) so we got a R$20 taxi. There had ... read more

Spending a week in Puerto Iguazu, which is so close to the Brazilian border town of Foz do Iguacu, we decided it would be a shame not to take a wee trip across to see what Brazil has to offer. Any people we spoke to told us that it was worth the visit, that it was a nice little town and that it was pretty enough. Given that people told us not to go next nigh or near Paraguay, we trusted that it must be worth the visit, if even only to say that we had been in Brazil given that we didn't have the time of the budget to travel further in Brazil to any of the more noteworthy cities like Rio or Porto Alegre. It is well connected to Puerto Iguazu, and you can ... read more

After 16 hours of wafts of chemical toilet and very little sleep, we arrived in the city of Foz Do Iguacu tired and a little grumpy. After the initial confusion of how to work the busses in town and a few wrong turns later we arrived at our base for the Brazilian side of the falls; Favela chic. We definitely understood the 'Favela' side of the name but couldn't quite work out the 'chic' part. It was pretty basic but what more can you expect for £11 a night including breakfast in Brazil?! We dumped out bags and off we headed to one of the top things to do on our trip...the mighty Iguazu falls! With the falls forming the border between Argentina and Brazil, the falls can be viewed from both countries, with both sides ... read more
