th January (Odyssey Day 64)
We had a nice lazy start this morning, as we didn’t depart until 1000. Donna and Glenn decided to stay a few extra days in Rio, so they will catch us up later in the trip, likely in Brasilia.
The rest of the group are sad to leave Rio, but made the most of the late start to enjoy a leisurely breakfast and one last trip to the beach.
We made a lunch stop in Petropolis, a lovely town not too far from Rio. It’s one of the older towns and is still used by the wealthy as a holiday spot. A lot of the roads are paved and there is the Imperial Museum, which was once the Summer Palace of an Emperor of Brazil.
Our camp tonight is in a town called Teresopolis. The camp had a very narrow entrance gate, which took a bit of effort for Simon to get into. We didn’t get a look around the town though, as we arrived quite late

The Imperial Museum and spent the last hour of daylight setting up the camp.
However, as the rest of my cook group consists of Donna and Glen, who decided to stay in Rio, I was the only one on cook group tonight. Fortunately a couple of the girls offered to help out and it didn’t take too long to have another lovely dinner served up. And of course afterwards there was cake! It was a joint birthday celebration for Maddie, Le, and Ann whom had all had their birthdays in the past couple of days.
This camp had nice showers and soft grass to pitch our tents on, but also came with noisy dogs and neighbours. Oh well, you can’t have everything, can you? We wouldn’t want to get spoilt on our trip.

th January (Odyssey Day 65)
After a beautiful drive through the mountains, we arrived in the town of Ouro Preto around 1600 in the afternoon. Ouro Preto is an old cobbled town built on and between a

Crossing some mountains on our way to Ouro Preto few hills. It has a couple dozen churches which are some of the main attractions of the town. It was once a mining town and is now a university town.
As it was Sunday, and a lot of the churches would be closed on Monday, we spent a couple of hours in town before heading to the campsite. It is a nice campsite, and we are the only people staying here at the moment. It’s not quite as hot here and it’s nice to have some peace and quiet.

th January (Odyssey Day 66)
Today we had a free day in Ouro Preto. The town is walking distance from the campsite so most of the group headed there after breakfast. Having enjoyed walking around yesterday, I decided to have a relaxing day today and stayed at the camp.
It was such a nice day to sit in the shade and enjoy the slight breeze while reading a book. After getting the clothes washing and truck cleaning done, of course!

th January (Odyssey Day 67)
We departed the campsite at 0800 and headed back into town. We had a couple of hours to look around before leaving Ouro Preto at 1100. I did manage to find a lovely little chocolatier that served some great hot chocolate! It didn't surprise me that half the group ended up in the same café - some for the hot drinks, others for the free wifi.
Tonight was a bush camp which we found quite late. It is rather difficult to find places to pull over and camp in Brazil. The place we found was just off a track and Simon cut steps down to this area so we could set up the tents. Lots of red dirt around here, and we were all sure to avoids the ant mounds.
