Arriving in Barrerinhas around just past 2pm, right away I was not impressed with the town, lots of people out on the street and it is very hot here, not so clean either. We asked the truck driver to drop us off at the Pousada Porto near the water's edge but it was full and all of the hostels and Pousadas around it, we were told Brazilians were on vacation and came here in droves especially weekends, we found a hotel but super expensive, 150 reais for a double, we asked the truck driver to look for some more, we saw one for only 10 reais but is really bad, one bed only and next to the living room where there is a loud tv, we said no, until finally the driver dropped us off at ... read more

After a lot of thinking in Belem we changed our plan slightly and headed for Sao Luis on a night bus after visiting another zoo type place in the middle of the city and milling about the markets. We arrived in Sao Luis at about 6.30 a.m. and hunted for a cheap hostel only to return to the first one we had been to after an hour and a half! It was a fairly attractive place (in comparison to the bigger cities) and had some pretty impressive beaches just a bus ride away that we visited. We didn´t hang around for long as we didn´t fancy staying in a big city and got a bus out to Barreirinhas first thing the following morning, a small town used as an access point to Lencois National Park. We ... read more

Je... read more

Hello, What a great experience we had today, just imagine driving through a desert landscape by 4wheel drive, backpacks on top, sitting in the back and admire the driving skills of our driver bringing us from Tutoia to Barreirinhas, while the landscape turns from green bush to real sanddunes, escaping from mosquitos by using ( a bit to late ) insectreppelant, taking pictures every now and then...

Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in the north of Brazil - tha park is close to São Luis whose 155 km2 is an ecosystem of sand dunes, rivers, natural and seawater lakes and mangroves. The high rainfall wet season fills the sand dunes creating a system of fresh water lakes the most spectacular being Lagoa Azul (Blue Lake) and Lagoa Bonita (Beautiful Lake). We swam in a few!!!!! The way to get there was a nightmare though, 5 hours on a local 4x4 truck with other 15 people (space as much as on the tube in a rush hour) and a pig!!! we had to get from Tutoia to Barreirinhas, from where we could reach the park. what an experience! I will try to put some photos later.......... ... read more

10th november- 13th november We land to Barreirinhas, lounge in our hammocks in our pousada (name given to the accomodation here in north Brazil). it was located by the riverfront...ideal for my continued life as a lazy traveller! we headed out in the afternoon, in a dune buggy, traversing the sandy terrain, crossing rivers on bargos that are man powered (cant understand why they have realised the invention of motorised pulleys!). Finally descending down on the picturesque Parque Nacional Lençois Marrenhias. Imagine this....beautiful white sand, rolling impressions created by the surrounding winds. Turqouise lagoons set among the sand dunes, created in the rainy season, and never becoming dry. We swam in the lagoons, walked bare foot on the cotton sand, managed to get sand in places unamginable. ate fruit from the wild tress that somehow grew ... read more

When we last left our caped crusaders they were trapped inside a car heading towards the town of Barreirinhas. Will they make it there today? Will they survive this drawn out car ride? Will they be able to experience life outside of the vehicle? Read on for more of their journey to answer these questions… January 18, 2006 Day 4 - Middle of Nowhere Land We had about 400 km to go today so we knew we would make it to Barreirinhas before supper time. We only got lost a couple times, but the driving went by fast, and we were all very excited to finally make it to our destination. Heather and I didn’t know what to expect when we pulled in since we didn’t do any research on the town, but after being in ... read more

From Paulinho Neves we went about an hour up the beach to Cabure. Normally this wouldnt be a major event - however we hired a local guy to take us in his buggy - he was cheaper than the rest - on the journey we discovered why - he basically couldnt drive on sand - which is kind of a key criteria for driving along the beach at reasonable high speeds ! After nearly throwing us out of the buggy twice and then getting a flat tyre - we decided that a 20 minute walk with the backpacks in the baking heat wouldnt be such a bad idea !! Cabure is a bizare place - it is basically a piece of sand - with a major river on one side and the sea on the other. ... read more
