CARNIVAL PREPARATIONS
COBBLED STONE STREETS OLD CITY SALVADOR FRIDAY 13.2.2015
Internet being just about non existent for the last five days, long delays when logging in so kept clear of it and at 75 cents a minute very precious, we do have 500 minutes free because of our status but that doesn't last long and would be equivalent of about 100 with our speed at home.
Rearing to go after five days at sea! Early morning docking and to meet our guide from DoBrazilRight at 8.30a.m. Salvador being the capital of northeastern state of Brazil, Bahia. Docked in a huge big bay with three islands in the distance off Salvador. All you can see for miles is houses perched on the cliffs above the port. I had booked this tour before we left Melbourne as much cheaper and longer than the ship tours. Had a fantastic overview of Salvador - going from one side of the peninsular to the other. Carnival on here tonight too! Lots of costumes, ribbons, characters etc. Been told to be very mindful of pick pockets here - they are masters at it! Very catholic country - 365 churches here in Salvador - went to a couple one being Church of Our Lord of
Bonfim built during the 1850's and famous for its wish ribbons that are tied around wrists or onto the wrought iron fence outside the church - then into the modern city of Salvador passing thousands of favelas which are basically the areas for the poor - houses stacked on top of houses, on top of houses, just look like slums but we were told some are very nice inside - like turning a switch - through an underground tunnel from the old and then you are hit with high rise business and shopping mall areas - like any other city of the world. Ocean on the business side and the bay being on the old side. We just loved the old areas - cobbled stoned streets - colourful houses and shops and lots of decorations for the carnival. The square of the Pelourinho Unesco World Heritage area is just gorgeous but a lot of walking uphill to get here - then down the Lacerda Elevator to the bottom of the cliff to browse the Mercado Modelo - the market filled with lots of crafts, souvenirs, lace and embroidery - left our tour here - THEN time for a few cold
MARKETS
What will this meat be like at end of the day 38 degrees! beers at a bar in the market - Brazilian beer great!! Very hot here today - signs show it as 38 degrees but I don't think it was that hot! Met a lovely Canadian couple at the bar who asked us to join their table - an hour or so later headed on back to the ship for our 4.30p.m. departure.
