Before emabarking on our journey to Itacare, I needed to take some money out to pay for the hostel. I had tried 3 banks the previous day to no avail, so I asked Inbal where a particular bank was that I knew would accept my card. He asked a few local friends and told me it was through a bad neighborhood but he would take me on his motorcycle if I wanted. 10 minutes later I was holding on strong to the rear handles of the bike, zooming through the steep curvy streets of Pelorinho. As we rode, I could see why one wouldn´t want to venture through the favela on foot. Dirty streets with skinny fiends taking shelter under bridges and in alleyways. The interesting part was this area was only 2 streets downhill from ... read more

Our introduction to the hostel was pretty nonchalant. A girl named Deb from England greeted us, asked our names, and showed us our room. Never did she ask for or write down our passport and basic info like every other hostel had done. The room was pretty standard; a lofty 4 bed dorm with rickity bunk beds, loose lockers, and a powerful fan. The ensuite bathroom was hilarious, it was so small that you could do everything at once - sht, shower, shave...Again, should have taken a photo. The owners, Peter and Deb (the same as who welcomed us), were the most friendly and relaxed people ever. They were only 30 and had moved to Itacare from England to find a more easy going lifestyle. The hostel had only been open for a year yet they ... read more

Bahia minha vida Happy New Year bloggees, I'm pleased to have released my death-grip on 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' long enough to update you all (I don't care how 2008 that is, I was late on the Stieg Larsson bandwagon). I'm even more pleased to announce that I have had no further contact with transvestite prostitutes nor grope-happy drivers. I never imagined that I would have to make these kind of declarations but hopefully 2011 will remain a sodomy-free year. Having said that, I must admit that I attended a Boxing Day Carnaval in which men dressed up as women and hit the town on the the huge floats and sound systems (known as trio eletricos) that seem to resonate through the shaking streets every other fortnight. There's no shortage of things to commemorate ... read more

We left Paraty and were bound for an idyllic surf town in the North of Brazil called Itacare. There was no direct bus, so we made the 2 hour trip back to Rio de Janerio (which is absolutely stunning at night) and then arranged for a 25hr overnight bus to Ilheus. We made a bet about how many times this bus would stop along the way with the maximum number of stops being 10. Lucky for us this particular bus had incredibly social personalities cracking jokes at each other and giving the bus drivers a hard time. It was a fun time with lots of laughing, but after about 15+ bus stops along the way (we completely lost count)... we were ready to get there. Once we got to our layover in Ilheus we spent some ... read more

Tim Version: * Went to a stunning beach village, Itacaré, and recovered from Carnaval. * Even got to get a bit of decent surfing in while I was there! The version that loves the cove style beaches of Itacaré, very tranquilo: Itacaré was a spot I had heard about from a Brazilian girl we surfed with in Pavones, Costa Rica, all those months ago. After Carnaval I certainly needed some down time at the beach and this was the place to have it. A lot of people from our Salvador hostel went down there, as well as to Morro, so it was also easy as no need to even make new friends. I was the very last Carnaval'er to leave the hostel (a couple of girls I was hanging around with also from Carnaval leaving a ... read more

Brasil Brasil! Land of sun and sea and toned bodies - oh yes indeedy, I´ve arrived! First few days were in Rio (pronounced Hee-o) in a little hostel a stone´s throw from Copocobana beach. Due to risk of muggings I didn´t take my camera anywhere in Hee-o but if you imagine the beaches were packed as it´s the height of summer, the sun was searingly hot, and little me was sat amongst it all like a little belisha beacon, the whitest, sweatiest thing in sight. There now, thats a nice mental image to start with :-) I did manage to do a guided tour to the main sights (with camera) but as I didn´t feel entirely safe and so not at liberty to do what I wanted under my own steam, I didn´t stop for long ... read more

Life sure is a beach in Brazil! I had planned to spend the last 2 months of my trip devouring the Brazilian beaches and that´s exactly what I am doing after months of biking and trekking mountains, jungles and volcanoes. I am currently in the state of Bahia in a little seaside town called Itacare, 6 hours south of Salvador. It´s very laid back here and all about the sun and surf. After a huge week in Rio it´s now time to rejuvinate before hitting the city again for Carnival next week. The beaches here in Brazil I must say, have been the best I have ever seen. Yes I do belive they are better than the ones we have in Australia (which I know is a massive call) apart from Whitehaven beach in the Whitsundays ... read more

Day 1 (Wednesday) - I didn't know where I was going. I tried to get directions from a cab driver but ended up just taking a cab for 7 Reals, way too much but I didn't want to walk in the dark. It turns out that there are kids there who will walk you to your hotel for basically nothing. The cab driver didn't know where the hostel, Buddy's Pousada, was, so I was feeling very good about taking the cab instead of trying to make it on my own. After getting some help from locals, we did make it. I knocked on the gate to find three guys sitting at a wooden table sitting around talking. It turned out to be the owner and two of his friends (Lee, Miguel and Andy). As I was ... read more

On the bus to Ilheus, I felt fortunate to have another window seat. Also, as a nice aside, I was by myself, which was amazing given the holiday season. Aguia Branca was the nicest bus company thus far in Brasil. It was very clean, a smooth ride and the seats were very comfortable. I slept on and off but mainly just enjoyed the views. It struck me once again how much of the land in Brasil is covered with this red clay sand. It is amazing. If Spielberg ever wants to make a film about settling Mars, this is the place to do it. The red earth covered by green grass and trees in the midst of amazing monoliths was quite awe-striking. I couldn't believe I had no camera to take the pictures. I made it ... read more
