Sunset over River in Amazon
the way back to the border town of Leticia in Colombia & Tabatinga in Brasil on the the main waterway here in the amazon Wow this really is it, my ´Sueno Dorado´ or major dream for the english readers of this text. This is why I have endured the numerous vaccinations last year in england and constantly taking the seriously strong larium for fighting malaria for & what I have been looking forward to most in my travels of latin america so far - the amazon and all that it has to offer.
I get quite lucky when I arrive from my flight from Bogota into the Colombian side of the amazonia which is Leticia and I meet the two australians greg & josie, from melbourne, who I spent time with two weeks ago at the Colimbian ruins in San Augustin. Anyway, arranging a tour with three people proved to a lot easier and cheaper than doing it on my own so as a group we manage to arrange a boat, driver, guide/chef for around fifty US Dollars a day which included all meals and drinks for the entire duration. After stocking the small motor lancha up with supplies and taking the waterproof gear for the jungle trekking all are ready to depart for the five day excursion into the wild unknown.
Sunset over River in Amazon
the way back to the border town of Leticia in Colombia & Tabatinga in Brasil on the the main waterway here in the amazon the first day already beats all my expectations as we manage to see three diferent types of monkey, sloaths or lazies as they are called in spanish, iguanas, boas, anacondas, parrots and macaws galore and one of the two types of dolphin that exist in the fresh water of the amazon and in particular around the area we are explring which is the Rio Yavari and its tributaries. This is such a fabulous way to see all the wildlife at close call and armed with a good pair of binoculars I purchased in Panama city, it makes all the difference. The grand type motor canoe we are in, allows us to steer path through areas which larger vessels and tourist day cruises cannot see and eventually we encounter thick mangroves, a mass of deep reeds whereby it is necessary to use the machetes to cut through the branches blocking the roof of the boat, now this is really what they call of the beaten track.
We manage to stay in four different tribal or indigenaous villages along the way which is a massive insight into the lives of the people who compromise three different countries here - Colombia, Peru
Papagayo resting place on the banks of the amazon
lunch on the first day in Peru with the company of macaws who seem to like fried eggs, rice and beans more than the food in the trees & Brasil of course, and whom manage to survive from the waters and jungle that surrounds them without the use of everyday items we are accustomed to.
On arriving at our first village to set camp for the nite our guide from the village of Jaguars kitted out in only an orange type straw skirt & MACHETE promtly leads us from the boat and up through the village into the back garden to go looking for spiders and other animals which inhabit this are in abundance.
