With all the videos, when you click on it, I think you have to copy and paste the link into a new browser. After a little fiasco with rental cars, local Brazillian tag-alongs and being pulled over in a road block, Lars, KrisAnn, Erin and I took one of the rental cars and headed north. It surely was tough to say goodbye to that hotel guy :). He was so sweet to me. We exchanged email addresses, though I have no idea how that's going to go since we have no common language... Anyways. Driving north, we discovered the terribleness of our map. It was just a loose interpretation of the roads in Alagoas. Eventually we made our way into a sugar cane field trying to find a secluded beach, but ended up at a three-way ... read more

Yeap! Not all travel is about fun. Some are about sorrow and loss, like this one. My father passed away and it wasn't easy not having the chance to say goodbye. In Tibet it takes 3 days from death to burrial and in the US usually 7 or more days. In Brazil, however, it all happens in less than 24 hours, and I did not arrive in time to be there at the end. For those of you who live away from your families, I say this: visit as much as you can and make every minute count. Find ways to make the distance shorter. I am glad to say that this travel blog got me closer to my Dad more than anything else this past year. He was an avid reader and knew a ... read more

I wrote this on Feb 5th and just found it in my notebook now: No special occasion for writing tonight. It´s just that it´s such a beautiful night and I felt like sharing it. I am sitting on the grass under a palm tree in the evening, to the side of the path the runs the full length of the beach (several kilometers). I came out to see the night because it is so clear and mild. I wanted to see the moon rising. Tonight the moon is more beautiful than I expected it to be. It is rising directly in front of the place I have chosen to sit. It´s nearly round still because the full moon was only 3 days ago. I am watching it rise over the the multicolored sailboats that line ... read more

This is going to be a quick entry, as I'm writing it while I wait for the bus down to Salvador. I really haven't done much, as I wanted a quiet few days before the madness of Carnival. Maceio seems to be mainly orientated around the beaches, where there is a substantial promenade, with lots of high rise luxury hotels. I was staying in a little hotel off the beach, so no super luxury for me. I did wander into the Ritz Plazamar hotel, wondering how expensive it could be and then walked straight out again. My budget could not stretch to the equivalent of a hundred pounds a night. It seems pretty safe here, I've been walking around with no hassle. The city centre seems quite run down in comparision to the beaches, there is ... read more

That night when we got home, Marcelo asked me what I wanted to do the next day. He said we could either go to a party or we could go to a futbol (soccer) game that he had mentioned to me a few days previous with his friend Jesus. He warned me that Jesus took the game rather seriously and was the kinda guy who would get ready for the game by consuming sufficient beer to get wild, paint his face, swing his jersy in the air, and spit curses at the top of his lungs from the stands. The answer naturally was, "Oh, I wanna go to the soccer game!" It seemed to me that soccer and culture in Brazil were almost one in the same; so if I wanted to understand what made Brazilians ... read more

Going to the gym with Marcelo´s mom was something else. The minute Mama walked through the door she started yelling out names. "Oi Marta! Tudo Bem?" Oi to this lady, Oi to that gent, Oi to absolutley everybody. She grabbed me by the arm and showed me off to everyone. My son´s girlfriend, the Canadian. Marcelo´s mom is 51 years old. If you met her you wouldn´t believe it. She has clear brown eyes, gorgeous brown skin with barely a wrinkle, and so much energy she never stops moving. She goes to the gym for 3 hours 4 days a week. Cardio to begin, weights with a personal trainer next (super hot personal trainer I might add, whooohoooo!), followed by a dance class, and that´s not all. After dance class more cardio, and finally a class ... read more

Lesson to all Canadians: Brazilians don´t give a s#$t about Canadian mula. "No we don´t exchange Canadian dollars. Not Canadian sorry. Not here sorry." Another lesson: travellers cheques (in Canadian funds especially) are equally useless in this city. And the most important lesson: this country suffers from a serious case of disorganization. You go into a bank and all you see is mayhem. People friggin´ everywhere, no information counters, no "Can I help you with something?" The only people standing around are stern looking, gun toting security guards who look at you like "are you kidding me?" when you ask them a question. In order to find out that the answer is "nao" you have to stand in loosely established line-ups for an eternity. Everyone will give you the same beaurocratic answer: "Oh no. We can´t ... read more

The plane I caught to Maceio belonged to a small airline called OceanAir. In order to board the plane, the other passengers and I had to get on a bus that took us to the other end of the airport. When the bus arrived in fornt of the plane all the passengers made a mad dash from the bus to the stairs which they ascended sheilded from the Sao Pulo rain by handsome young Brazilian men holding umbrellas. I felt like a movie star for about two seconds. Once inside and seated, a flight attendant acted out the safety instructions for the passengers that another flight attendant spoke into a microphone, first in Portuguese and then read from a card in English. “Thanks for flying with OceanAir. You make us grow.” On the way a woman ... read more

So, here I am in Brasil. I arrived the day before yesterday after more than 24 hours of flying. I took off and landed so many times in that period of time that I lost count. I learned a few things about flying that I will keep in mind for future voyages: bring power bars, things like nuts and other satiating foods containing protiein, because air line food is for dogs. Since I didn´t want to be presented with pork I opted for the veggie meal. Big mistake. What came for supper was some kinda bean something or other with unidentifiable ingredients, served on top of a bed of mushy fragments of cauliflower and nutritionless rice. There was a hard white bun with margarine, a disgusting bowl of bean salad, and a bowl of mushy, flavourless ... read more

This here is my first entry. I've been meaning to get something like this set up before embarking on my 3 month journey to Brasil for quite some time now, it's just that I keep finding other things to do with my time. I'm a last minute kinda person, I can't help it, it's my nature. I leave in less than 2 weeks now and feel more and more grateful to be getting out of Vancouver, BC each day. The winter came both early and with a vengence this year. We've been hit with numerous storms (one that left us Vancouverites unable to drink the tap water for 10 days), snow (twice already), and more rain than even we are used to seeing here in this city known for rain. Bring on the sun! That's all ... read more
