So were still in La Paz and weve had an extremely busy week of doing not much of anything at all and its great! Every morning our first priority is a smoothie from the market. Although the past couple of days our clock hasnt worked so sometimes we dont make it out of the hostel until mid afternoon! A couple of days ago the clock said 10.30am when we were heading out, we were so proud of ourselves for waking so early and planned to use our day fully by having a nice breakfast and then going shopping and taking in some city sights. On our way out we met a friend in the street, a yank whos name escapes me, hes been here for a couple of months so we asked him to recommend a ... read more

So we´re now in La Paz. Its quite strange being in such a big busy city after being in the countryside for so long but it seems really cool. We got the afternoon bus after going for breakfast at quite a dodgy reataurant in the centre of Copacabana. The guy brought me fried egg with a small black curly hair in it! Yuck! And when i pointed it out he took it away, picked the hair off and brought it back!! Arrgghh! I just gave him a horrified look and he said "oh, do you want a new one"?!? I assured him that i did! So weve spent the past couple of days hanging out and shopping. Everything is so cheap here. Accommodation is about 1.30gbp per night and eating out is about the same. We’ve ... read more

Copacabana, although a very nice small town is basically a jumping off point for visiting the Isla Del Sol on Lake Titicaca. It’s the birthplace of the Inca sun and is really beautiful. You can do day or overnight trips by boat from Copacabana. It’s a couple of hours by boat so we decided to hike along the coast to another town called Yampupata which is just across the strait from the island and get a boat from there. Lonely Planet said the trek is 17km and should take 3 to 4 hours. We set off at 9am and arrived at 3pm! But to be fair we did stop at the market on the way for some fresh squeezed orange juice and after about an hour or so of walking we did get lost. Not totally ... read more

So we managed to escape Puno by getting a boat across Lake Titicaca to the border of Bolivia where we caught a collectivo to the very touristy lakeside town of Copacabana. We got the boat at 7am and the captain only had one eye. Marvelous. It was 8 hours to Bolivia and it was stunning weather all the way. Laura severely burnt her nose and I spent most of the time practicing my Spanish verbs and taking in the scenery. Every hour or so a guy who worked on the boat had to take up the floor boards and scoop out water coming in from the bottom of the boat. Very reassuring. So I decided to spend most of my time on the roof. That way I didn’t have to see how much water they needed ... read more

A long, long time ago, Dinosaurs lived in Bolivia. There was a big lake with lots of trees and fruits and the Dinosaurs liked to go there very much. Then one day the volcano next to the lake erupted and covered the lake and the dinosaurs in dust and turned them into fossils. Everyone forgot about the lake and the dinosaurs for millions of years. In the meantime, two continents collided and pushed the ground with the lake and the footprints into the sky to make a hill. Then one day, at the cement factory a man in his digger was digging the hill and found some big footprints. The more he dug out of the hill the more footprints he found so he called an archaeologist who came and looked at the footprints. The archaeologist ... read more

Four boys played tennis in the departure lounge of Sucre airport oblivious to the chaos outside. The members of Congress had just flown in to get away from their usual haunt of La Paz and the madness that was ensuing there. The President had just resigned and they needed somewhere to convene to discuss the appointment of a new President. Problem was, the trouble followed them! Crowds of protesters were awaiting them at the airport and we had to struggle past them to go into the airport to get a flight to our friend's in Cochabamba (still in Bolivia). As we sat forlornly looking out the window at the heavily-armed commandos surrounding the airport there was an announcement in Spanish, then in garbled English, that this would be the last flight from Sucre, after which all ... read more

This weekend was intended to be one of the highlight trips of our time in Bolivia - a four day jeep tour in the Salar de Uyuni (the immense salt plains on the Altiplano - check it out: www.salardeuyuni.com). However, all the political trouble going on in Bolivia has meant that all the main roads to the cities are blocked by protestors, and so there were no buses going. For a brief background to what its all about, read this BBC news article Now, although some may say we are cheap, we aren’t that bad, and we did look into flights instead to get us to the starting point of Tupiza about 800 miles from Cochabamba. But after sitting in a travel agent for most of the day there was no luck as being the only ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Potosi June 3rd 2005

Ok, so, weve missed our bus to Uyuni (the main town for visitng the saly lakes) but theres another one at 6pm so weve got the whole day to kill. After missing the bus we tried to arrange a collectivo to take us becasue the bus doesnt arrive at Uyuni until about 1am, which isnt the best plan. However after having had many locals laugh at my spanish I mangaged to find out that no taxis or collectivos would go to Uyuni because it is all blockaded!! How dare Bolivia have a revolution when I want to visit the Lakes! I asked again if the bus would be ok and the guy said that at that time of night the blockades should be open. So im sure it will be fine! The plan is to visit ... read more

So Potosi is a really nice little town nestled in the mountainside next to a huge silver mine. Our hostel was vile and very very cold (no such thing as central heating here) I wore two pairs of trousers, 3 tshirts, a jumper, my silk sleeping bag liner, my sleeping bag and the covers from the bed and i still couldnt get warm. I think i may invest in some bolivian thermals! We only had a day here so decided to visit the Silver Mine in the morning and then go to some natural hot springs in the afternoon. We managed to haggle a bit and got both tours for about 5gbp each! The mine was brilliant, although Naomi and Laura didnt enjoy it. First of all we had to put on all the safety gear, ... read more
