Warning: There were animals slightly injured in this story. Sorry. Ambue Ari national reserve is a rarely heard of animal sanctuary somewhat off the beaten track (which is what drove me to go there in the first place). The park is for animals, normally the animals have been maltreated or kept in captivity by circuses or ambitious pet owners. Those that travel through bolivia will probably hear about Villa Tunari and intiwarayassi, which are part of the same movement with the same objectives and whatnot, which normally has about 30 or 40 volunteers. Whereas Ambue Ari normally has a maximum of 5 or 6 (and that's pushing it). And there's a core body of 6 bolivians that run the park so knowing spanish is a big plus. The animals that one finds in the parks range ... read more

Death train? pfft. It was a bit dissapointing actually. 14 hours, two american films (in spanish, though we got subtitles for the second one... then fell asleep) and some bad food. It was nothing more than a slightly bumpy train. If anyone died on it it was probably from some nasty meal rather than any train induced injury. One nice thing about it was the people selling things at the stations - when we arrived we would open our windows, lean out and buy cakes, breads, drinks, set meals.. it was great. Super-pullman class (one above 1st class) turned out to be little more than British Rail´s 2nd class, but it was good enough to survive the journey with some sleep to boot. We were tired when we arrived here, so booked into th first hotel ... read more

I spent another couple of days in Samipata, enjoying the peace and the sunshine but there was no ATM and I was running out of money and time so I thought I should head back to the city. I´ve only been in Santa Cruz for one day and I planned to leave for Brazil today but I´ve already had to delay until Tuesday! I had a nightmare day yesterday trying to organise posting stuff, travel plans and getting supplies and by the end of the day I´d pretty much acheived not that much at all! Oh well, nevermind, its really hot here and now that I´ve explored the city a bit further its really quite nice. Last night I went to a concert in the stadium in the city with two really fun irish girls from ... read more

Well, I finally made it out of La Paz. My excuse for staying there for 3 weeks instead of 3 days is that at first I was too frightened to do the Death Road and so procrastinated about booking it, then I wanted to do it a second time and then for the past 5 days I've been really unwell. I think it was a bad combination of altitude, street food and, well, Bolivia. I was in bed for 2 days after the second Death Road trip and then I felt a bit better. There was huge fiesta in the city at the weekend to celebrate the birthday of La Paz and in the main plaza outside our hostel there were huge crowds and live music and little stalls selling wierd alcohol drinks. I lasted about ... read more

- FOOD: Chicken straight from the freezer to the fryer (will my stomach cope?), - AREA: The border town Quijarro in Bolivia is the most depressing border town so far. Suddenly transported into worse poverty as Bolivia is South America´s poorest country. Santa Cruz is very different to Brazil and I immediately liked it. Small city though with not much to do but it feels safe. - TRANSPORT: The 'Death Train' to Santa Cruz perhaps called the Death Train due to the fact it´s on it´s last legs. First experience of overnight travel without a blanket provided. - PEOPLE: Very laid back and friendly. The women really do wear big skirts, hats and socks and plaits! Except for the teenage girls who seem to prefer Western fashion (can´t think why!). Not much hassle - they´re all ... read more
