From Salta we went North, North, North on to Bolivia. What a change of scenery! Bolivia, Bolivia Bolivia. Very little infrastructure hot during the day and extremely cold at night. This is one of the highest countries in the world. We walked with our backpacks over the border, got a couple of stamps in our passports and suddenly there we were, tired hot and hungry with absolutely no Bolivianos. (Cash) We rested in a typical Bolivian restaurant with random pictures on the wall. When you ask for a menu they look at you like you´re an alien. Most of the time we just pointed at what the locals were having as this seems to be the only thing there is. Meat and rice with a water. We needed to make a sharp exit with our Israeli ... read more

The Border crossing between Argentina and Bolivia at Villazon is amusing. The two countries are connected at this point by a bridge, with immigration offices on both sides. The funny thing is that nobody enforces the people going to Bolivia to enter them, so one can just walk by. This is what happened to me by mistake. When I tried to correct it, I realized that crossing back to Argentina wasn't that simple, but after some explanations I managed to stamp my passport. The border town of Villazon wasn't too inviting, so I took straight away a train to Tupiza, a few hours away. I was expecting Tupiza to be similar to Villazon and the image I had of Bolivia - a 3rd world country with allot of poverty and problems. But actually I found a ... read more

We arrive at the border crossing between argentina and boliva at 5.40am in the morning. What a shock it is!!!! Totally freezing and so we all wrap up and the difference in the people is mad. The bolivan people are all very small and ugly and the woman all have big puffy skirts (knee length) with thick tights (like thick thick woolen) and sandals( its baltic). And to keep warm they have sheets (woven in different colours) wrapped around them like shawls (lots of them) Really hard to explain properly!!! We walk to the border crossing and already their is a massive queue!! The Bolivans seem to think that they can push in and go in front of everyone. Thankfully the argentina army try and stop them!!! We keep close together to keep them back, however ... read more

I automatically fell in love with the Bolivan people. short, stocky people. dark skinned and sporting round rimmed hats that were functionally useless!!! but looked great!! We arrived in Tupiza in Friday...knackered! starving, we found a popular hangout- there is not much to be said about Bolivan food apart from it need taste!!! this country does not know anything about salt. food is bland and ordinary...alot of chicken!!! not evry impressed after all the steaks i had been eating in Argentina!! This was the area where Butch cassidy and The Sundance Kid made their last stand! they were killed in Tupiza, after their numerous legendary Bank robberies! and what a place to do die. Tupiza is ringed by the rugged Cordillera de Chichas- an amazing landscape of rainbow coloured rocks, hills mountains and canyons!! We had ... read more

I left Salta at 00:30 and took a bus to La Quacia, which is the last town before the Bolivian border. The bus dropped us off 7 hours later. Border crossings are always tense places to be and I was expecting the worse at this one, but it turned out to be the easiest and most relaxed so far. I walked to the end of town and once I crossed the bridge I had left Argentina and was in Villarion, Bolivia, where immigration formalities were almost non-existent. I managed to catch a bus to Tupiza straight away. All throughout this trip, I've met travellers warning me about Bolivia's buses: they resemble the scene of a car crash, have no toilets and it's not uncommon to see urine running up and down the gangway, as someone couldn't hold ... read more

Yesty morning I left the warm embrace of Humahuaca and got a bus to La Quiaca which borders Bolivia. Opposite me on the bus was a young girl with her baby who proceeded to poo everywhere. It absolutely stank and there was no air conditioning and I couldn't open the windys. She sort of mopped up the excess and plonked the pagan pile (Podge & Rodge) on top of the place where you rest cups. I was appalled. I opened my bag and gave her some wetwipes which she took from me. I was really careful not to make skin contact. But then she still didn't move the stinky festering mound off the cup stand. I got over it in time, but there was no way I could complete my lunch of cheese and avocado ... read more

Phew - made it across to Bolivia yesterday...overnight bus from Salta then a quick coffee at 7am before a walk across the border into Villazon on the Bolivian side...very different. Not unlike the way the roads used to change from tarmac to something less when we´d go across the border to Donegal years ago! Probably shouldn´t have said that since we´re now in Tupiza together with a couple of Donegal men we met in Salta last week, together with a couple of English girls who are heading the same way. Very nice hotel with a pool - not bad for GBP10per night. I really hope this sets the standard for the rest of Bolivia...though I doubt it. The town itself is quite dull...a lovely setting in the middle of the desert, at some 3km altitude. Has ... read more

On 20th Feb at 7.30 a.m. we got a bus from Puno in Peru to La Paz (3660m) in Bolivia. The views of the barren mountains, some snow capped, were really beautiful. We arrived in La Paz at 5.15 p.m., and got a taxi to a relatively nice hotel in the heart of the city. It was really chaotic, with loads of traffic and every inch of pavement occupied by stalls and people shouting about what they were trying to sell. We were still with George and Em (Rein and Char had decided to stop for a few days at Copacabana, a small town on Lake Titicaca on the Bolivian side) and we all had a good feeling about La Paz, which seemed really exciting and entertaining. Of course I wouldn’t want to live there it ... read more
