For an amateur geologist like myself, Tupiza was so delicious. The little town was nestled in a spectacular setting of red-rock canyons, multicolored hills, and cactus forests and bisected by a dramatic, ever-changing river. With only 25,000 people, it was small enough that I easily got out of town and accessed fine hiking trails. Plus, in Bolivia, everything was wonderfully affordable, so I had a... Read Full Entry

Well-written
Love the first few paragraphs of this blog. Makes me nostalgic. Wish I'd took the time to blog northern Argentina/southern Bolivia.

Well written? Wow!
Thanks, Jason, for the kind words, especially since you are one of our best TB reflective writers. I think for all of us there are so many places we never blogged about--maybe we'll do it when we're too old to travel. Glad this brought back memories!

Sore bum in Tupiza ;)
Ok, this blog made us giggle...we had sore bums in Tupiza both from riding horses and from the food. We are being as polite as you in that we were glued to the toilet! A strong stomach is definitely required in Bolivia! Nice pics of the canyons, Neil loved the horse riding (he liked to think he was John Wayne, I think this is a guy thing!), me not so much...too painful on my bum ;)

Bolivian giggles
Glad this brought back memories. Like you, I was often sick in Bolivia--maybe every two weeks, but it was worth it--such great juices and street food. And how do people manage to ride for hours? Callouses on the bum?

The eyes have it
You have an eye or is it a nose...for beauty. Everywhere you go from your pics is gorgeous. Gives me a yearning to somehow return to South America to enjoy the magical vistas that colour your world.

Magical vistas
Well, come on and join me here! Many of my fine vistas come from lingering in a place, walking that road less traveled. I have the luck of a slow traveler--you can have it too!

Lovely pictures!
Wow, we loved your pictures of this great region. Well, the toilet in Bolivia always is your dear friend - we had the same experience. But we loved Tupiza and spontanously stayed there much longer. Actually we took the Uyuni Tour from Tupiza. It was not more expensive after some bargaining but simply great, as we were just 4 on the jeep with an amazing guide. Thanks for all the mermories that came up with you blog :-). We are already waiting for your next blog.

Tupiza lovers unite!
I'm so glad you liked my photos and Tupiza! While there, I met so many people who just came to arrange a tour and left quickly. Good for you for bargaining a good price for your tour--I'm horrible with that. I've a desk in my room, so hopefully I'll soon write of Potosi. See you there!

I'm glad you enjoyed my blog and photos. I just read yours on your home island, and now I certainly want to visit Saint Lucia! Stay warm in Calgary.
