I've spent the last 3 days stuck in the back of a jeep listening to Michael Jackson's 'Bad' and Bolivian National music.... Thankfully the scenery more than made up for it! We needed to cross the border from Chile into Bolivia. As there are no proper roads between the two we decided to take the excursion across the Salt flats which also got us across the border. We got up bright and early and arrived at Pamela Tours for 8am. We then got into a bus which took us to the Chile immigration where we got our stamps. We then had to wait for some more people to come. It was only when the others turned up we discovered that the border might be closed due to snow! Well we all set off in this mini ... read more

Another touch and go border crossing with Bolivia closed due to heavy snow fall the day before we left San Pedro De Atacama on route across the Salt Plains to Uyuni. The only way to cross into Bolivia from San Pedro is a 3 day 4WD tour.... This was are first taste of real altitude as we crossed the alti plano (high plain) which stretches across Bolivia and the high plain. Spent the first night at Lago Colorado (Red Lake) which is 5000 meters above sea level...... with no heating in the basic accomodation I almost froze to death. The second night was spent at the Salt Hotel, yes a hotel made from salt..... it was an amazing site and a little warmer than the previous night...... Without wishing to bore people with detail, sit back ... read more

On the dusty, bumpy ride from Potosi to Uyuni the bus made one of many stops to clear rocks from the road. My eyes drifted upward from my book and followed the driver hopping from his door and walking outwards from the bus. Then they fixated on Jupiter. Actually, no, Jupiter bears more resemblance to normalcy than does the eyeful I was presented with this morning. The sky was the only normal part, a bright midday blue with a few whisps of clouds. Below was the peak of a narrow mountain with a rounded tip coloured a fleshy red, as if the earth were sticking its tongue out at you. Rolling off to the right were velvet green hills covered with a uniform, smooth dark green grass and two, and only two, kinds of plantlife. The ... read more

31 Mayo - Salar de Uyuni Got up this morning for sunrise with Nikki. We don't have breakfast until 9:00, but neither one of us wanted to miss our last sunrise in this incredible place, and possibly our last sunrise together. Nikki has given me three incredible compliments, and the latest one came last night. Well, make that two, one was a random comment that I am taking as a compliment. The first came when we were in La Paz. I had bought some flowers for our hostel room and Nikki said that I was going to make someone a great husband someday. That is one of the nicest things that anyone has ever said to me. The second was a couple of nights ago. We were in this awfully cold place, trying to warm up. ... read more

30 Mayo - Salar de Uyuni We are working our way out of the desert. This is our last night and tomorrow will be a short day. We breakfast late, leave late, and arrive in Uyuni early. These past three days have ridden us hard. They have been long days, with lots of driving, lots of intense sun, and lots of dust, and cold nights. This is definitely a land of extremes. We go from freezing at night to burning up during the day. Here, the sun and the wind rule everything. You have to dress in layers. If you are in the shade, you’re freezing. In the sun, sweating and looking for a sunburn, but if there’s wind, back to freezing and still looking for a sunburn. This place is so bizarre. It is like ... read more

28 Mayo - Salar de Uyuni Well, made the overnight trip to Uyuni. Cold. Long. Uncomfortable. I didn't sleep much and Nikki was still ill. But we are all looking forward to this escape from reality. I am in yet another ancient place, this one more of a dreamscape. These salt flats are so extensive, they go on for days. I saw the name Salvador Dali on a map and I can completely see him here, “The Persistence of Time” and other surrealist pieces could easily be set here. Throw in some San Pedro and there you have it. We are in the middle of nowhere, in a cold-ass part of the world where not much lives or grows. The people who do live here are only here for the salt. It is their life, and ... read more

Day 1- After a long pause waiting in our jeep for our guide to join us, we finally head off on our 4 day tour through what is said to be one of the most beautiful place sin the world. It turns out that our delay was due to the company briefing or guide on what we´re about see. they had been photocopyin all the papers detailing all the sites that we are gong to, so that he would be able to read them out to us when we hit our destinations! it turns out that it was his first tour to the Salt flats, and it would be as much a holiday for him as it would be for us!! His name was Arsel- similarly pronounced to Ass hole! and our driver´s name was Adelio..but ... read more

Today we are hanging out in Ununi to relax after our very scary bus ride yesterday. We booked our salt flat trip today, it will leave tommorrow for four days. We will be travelling by jeep to the flats, and we have many exciting things planned along the way, including climing a 5200m volcano, lounging in hot springs, watching colourful flamingos, watching some gysers and much more. We´ll be leaving tommorrow at 10:30. We had a bit of trouble actually booking our trip as none of us really speak very good spanish, and everyone here only speaks spanish (since Ununi is a fairly remote bolivian town). Also there are no ATM´s here and all the banks are closed today, so we had a bit of trouble booking our trip without paying, but we finally did, and ... read more

I was a bit apprehensive as we approached Bolivia. Everyone said 'Watch out for pickpockets, don't leave bags alone, don't walk around in big groups and draw attention to yourself, don't walk around by yourself, only carry the money you need blah blah blah etc etc etc....I was starting to wonder why I had chosen to travel through this obviously way too dangerous country. And now I am glad I chose not to listen because Bolivia has turned out to be one of the highlights. First up the border crossing between Argentina and Bolivia lived up to all expectations. Lots of people in line carrying everything but the kitchen sink. Children and dogs running everywhere. Even the occasional donkey wandered past. We were lucky to get there just after siesta so made it through the line ... read more
