29th September – Copacabana to La Paz

Left Copacabana around 9am for the 4hr drive to La Paz. Great scenery along the way and our guide stopped to let us take pictures. The road climbs up to a high point of 4100mtres above sea level and then slowly decreases again winding itself around Lake Titicaca. The road ends at a town called San Pedro where you have to cross the lake by boat and the bus, car or whatever vehicle, has to cross the lake on a barge driven by an outboard motor (see photos). Quite hilarious, they make everyone get out of the vehicle and take a separate boat as the barges with the vehicles have sunk before.

We crossed the lake and embarked at a town called San Pablo. We were lucky enough to be there on a day they were having a school band contest. The bands had to perform on a barge on the lake and be judged. Very colourful and the band we heard was great. Bolivia is famous for it’s musicians.

Continuing along the road we stopped at this community where they were having a party. They welcomed us to join in and have a dance. Got pulled in to dance with the locals, we believe they were already half drunk as they drink from when they start until they pass out. It was great to see how much fun everyone has.

We continued driving and arrived at a town called El Alto outside of La Paz which is where the airport is situated. This town is 4,100 mtrs above sea level. Very hot, dusty and dirty place with about 1,000,000 people. From then on it was downhill literally to La Paz. La Paz sits in a bowl surrounded by the alitplano and is only 3,800 mtrs above sea level. You drop about 300 mtrs from the top to the middle of the city. Quite amazing to look at. The town is surrounded by high snow capped mountains.

Staying at a great hotel – Plaza Hotel in the main street. Traffic here is just as chaotic as everywhere else we have been. Heaps of cars and everyone beeping at each other. We all had dinner at the hotel which is located on the top level. Great views of the city by night. Tomorrow we explore La Paz.
