The next day we headed back towards the Peruvian border for Copacabana and Lake Titicaca. The lake is the highest inhabited body of water in the world and by this time both of us were feeling the full effects at being at high altitude – headaches, lack of appetite, upset stomach, fatigue, etc. A few new friends from our hostel in La Paz were heading there too so we had a little tour group to get the bus and ferry to the Isla del Sol (Island of the Sun). After checking in to whatever accommodation we could find, we set of on foot to explore the town of Yumani on the southern end of the island. Several places seemed closed and we wandered if it was just a bit of a sleepy town but then we ... read more

"MERRY CHRISTMAS" TO FRIENDS AND FAMILY - HOPE YOU ALL HAD A GREAT ONE! Friday 26th December – Boxing Day We left Puno on Tuesday 23rd December to travel by bus across the border from Peru into Bolivia. The journey from Puno to Copacabana is only 178 kilometres, but it took five and a half hours, two and a half to the border, two and a half crossing the border, then another half an hour into the town of Copacabana. The journey wasn’t that scenic, Peruvians like littering their highways with mountains of dumped rubbish, and the coach windows were so filthy, that photographs would not have been any good anyway. Check out the photograph of the main bus terminal in Puno, next to the unofficial town rubbish tip; not exactly a good lasting impression of ... read more

In the past few days I have been trying to re-stretch my jeans as they came back smaller in the wash, but may also be putting on weight at the same time so not the best jeans situation to be in! Anyway this morning we got up early and took a boat ride to Isla Del Sol which is an island in Lake Titicaca. It has the most amazing views and is rich in Inca history. After the first 20 meters we were all puffed out and had to stop for a rest, the high altitude had such an effect on us and our breathing. Our muscles were fine but we just found it so hard getting enough oxygen! After a while our bodies got more used to it and it got a bit easier. The ... read more

After returning to La Paz from our wonderful journey through the Salt Flats outside of Uyuni, we stayed 2 nights and prepared to leave for Copacabana. We took a taxi up to the Cementario area where the buses and combis leave for Copacabana and found a bus ready to leave and we were in Copacabana in a few hours. We stayed at the Hostal Sonya, on the 4th floor -- a nice room, clean with hot water. We explored the town and found that our hotel was away from the tourist mess on the main street. We walked down past the Cathedral with the beautiful blue Portugeuse tiles on the domes and the main square was an interesting collection of street vendors selling religious paraphanalia (sp??) and other stuff. Then the main street to the port ... read more

Sacred Island I'd been visiting Incan sites and steeping myself in their legends for months in and around Cuzco, Peru, the navel, the center of the Incan Empire. Now, on the Isla del Sol (Island of the Sun) in Lake Titicaca, I was high on a ridge on the tip of the island at the womb of the empire--the Sacred Puma Rock, the site of their creation myth, where their sun god and first people emerged. I'd come full circle. The Isla del Sol, off the coast of Copacabana, Bolivia, was wonderfully remote, serene and primitive--no internet or cars, but lots of pigs, sheep, cows, and donkeys wandering around or hanging out on the beaches. I love towns where, at sunset, old people or children drive these animals from their pastures, through the streets and to ... read more

After departing Sucre on a shocking bus (don't book with Copacabana 1 Mem, go with Copacabana) overnight we ended up in La Paz again! We were warned by an American couple that they had nearly been robbed, "60 seconds" before we got off the bus. I found this hard to believe as he had his expensive camera dangling from his neck and she had a day pack limply hanging from her hand. They were either idiots or lying, we didn't stick around to inquire further. We headed inside to grab a surprisingly good coffee, papaya/banana milkshake and cake breakfast in the terminal before catching a taxi across town to the collectivio station and promptly juming in a Minivan destined for Coroico. This town is at the bottom of the death road, but thankfully the driver took ... read more

After an early boat from Isla Amantaní gets me back to Puno I make my way by bus along the lake's southern shore to Peru's border with Bolivia. There are two border crossing points in the Titicaca area, at the Peruvian towns of Desaguadero and Yunguyo. Desaguadero has a particularly unsavoury reputation (smuggling, criminality, generic border unpleasantness) and besides, Yunguyo is right on the edge of the lake and far more convenient for reaching my first stop in Bolivia: Isla del Sol. Isla del Sol is one of several islands on Lake Titicaca on the Bolivian side, and by some way the largest on the entire lake. The island has long held great importance for both Aymara and Quechua-speaking peoples in the area, the island's name coming from its role in local creation myths as the ... read more
