The most popular turistically climbed mountain in the Cordillera Real. Even if there have been tens of people from La Paz climbing during the weekend, the ascent was worth of it. Huayna offers incredible views of the mountains in Cordillera Real and on the other side Coroico, behind which the Amazon basin starts. I can just recommend (but better on the weekday ;)... read more

After having spent 5 days in La Paz to accclimatise myself, I was ready to try and climb Huayna Potosí, billed as the easiest mountain in the world over 6000m to climb. Most of the trek to the summit is not technical, and as it is so close to La Paz, it is easy for novices like myself to get used to the altitude there before ascending. Although not the tallest mountain in the Cordillera Real (Royal Range) in the Andes near La Paz, Huayna Potosí is nevertheless 6088m tall (just shy of 20,000 feet), making it the 114th tallest mountain in the world (so I’m told). According to our agency, roughly 10 to 15% of people who try to ascend don’t make it, normally because of altitude sickness. The ascent and descent only took ... read more

Huayna Potosí is a glacier-covered mountain located 15 miles north of the city of La Paz. The first accent of the mountain was done in 1919 by Germans Rudolf Dienst and Adolf Schulze. 91 years later, I decided to follow the same route to the 6,088 meter summit. My father, sister, and I planned the 3-day trek through the Huayna Potosí travel agency, run by Dr. Hugo Berrios. The first day of our journey, we arrived at the first refuge, located at the base of the mountain. The genial staff served us lunch, consisting of energy foods packed with vitamins and carbohydrates. Shortly after, our training for ice hiking commenced. We trekked for about one hour in rocky terrain until we reached an impressive glacier. There, our guide showed us how to properly use our crampons ... read more

Climbing Huayna Potosi After acclimatizing in Condoriri for five days and then resting in La Paz for two, we were ready for a new mountain. This time breaking the 6000 meter border. Huyana Potosi is probably the most touristy mountain in Bolivia, popular because of the altitude of 6088 meters and the easy access. But the mountain can present some interesting and serious routes beside the normal route that most people uses. The West face is about 1000 meters high and contain several routes, and the east face have a route that Hilde and I decided to go for; "Via Los Frances". A 300 meter snow face. The most of the agencies in La Paz offer the mountain as a two day trip, which is pretty crazy when you know that most of the people are ... read more

I don't think that I've ever really cried out of happiness. Sure, I've choked back a few tough tears at a few events in my life but not really had a good cry ... but this achievement took me to that place. While I was on the Inca trail one of my group was excitedly telling me about a peak in Bolivia that was over the magic 6000m and was suitable for 'beginners'. I was interested! I hadn't really considered or researched much about Bolivia as the good news about extending my career break had only come through in recent weeks - so suddenly I had an itinerary to create! On reaching La Paz I settled into my nice hostel and decided to have a day or so relaxing and seeing the sights before making any ... read more

SO it was time to begin my next climb. UNfortunately we knew that weather conditions were against us but we were still determined to get to the top of Huayna Potosi. For ROb this would be his first high mountain and for me my second. Although this time I felt a lot stronger than when I climbed Cotopaxi. Potosi is only 200meters higher than Cotopaxi and is undertaken over 3 days which is a lot more time. We were picked up from our hostel at8am and had the luxery of of a 2hour taxi t othe base camp at 4700 meters at the base of Potosi. Once we arrived we met our guide Miguel who is 43years old and really looking forward to the climb. We also met a group of climbers who were on their ... read more

Oh the things Braeden gets me to do! First it was spending a day on a mountain bike after 18 years of not riding. Then it was hiking the Inca Trail for 4 days with no previous hiking experience. And now, the big one - climbing a mountain 6088m above sea level when I have never climbed anything before in my life. How he gets me to do it, I have no idea, but it was insane! To put it into perspective, Huayna Potosi is just 26 feet short of 20,000ft and stands higher than: Mt Erebus (highest in Europe at 5642m); Mt Kilmanjaro (highest in Africa at 5895m); and Mt Logan (highest in Canada at 5959m). Despite what the posters say (¨easiest 6088m mountain climb¨) - it is not easy. Nor does it feel like ... read more

Now that all of my fingers have completely thawed (bar left hand ring finger which still has no feeling in the tip..hmm.) I thought it was time to recount one of, if not the, best experiences of my life. This time last week Kath, Benny (fellow volunteer from Switzerland) and I were couped in the back of a small toyota, winding our way through rocky fields towards the Andes mountain ranges. Our sights were set on the peak of one mountain in particular, Hyuana Potosi. At 6088m, Hyuana Potosi is not only one of the tallest in the Andes, but in the world. To give some perspective; Mt Cook is 3753m; the highest mountain in Europe, Mt Erebus, is 5,642m; Mt Kilmanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, is 5,895 m. So, in short, it´s a big ... read more

On our previous visit to Bolivia we only travelled across the country from east to west and in doing so missed out on some of the more obvious tourist destinations. Our plan for this, our second visit to the country, was to travel from north to south and take in a number of the country’s “must sees“. With Lake Titicaca already ticked off, our next destination was to be La Paz. La Paz is famed for being the world’s highest capital city. Technically this isn’t true, as Sucre is Bolivia’s capital, but La Paz it is most definitely the heart and soul of the country. Irrespective of the city’s claim on a place in the Guinness Book of Records it is a fascinating place and most definitely high. For such a large city it is improbably ... read more

I´m not joking with the title I really thought I wasn´t going to make it at one stage. Mountains are no joke... Bolivia has some of the highest mountains in the world and also the most accessable. I had talked to quite a few people who had tried to climb some of these peaks and decided to try one myself. To be honest I wanted to climb a volcano from San Pedro de Atacama that was 5,480m and only took 5 hours return but it was too expensive. I was told to wait till La Paz were it was much cheaper. And so the hard ship begins.... (I´ll try to make it less painful and quicker for you) I got picked up at 7.15am after having only 6 hours in bed with 2-3 hours of sleep, ... read more
