We flew from Rio to Sucre via Sao Paulo & Santa Cruz, by the time we arrived we were happy to be hearing Spanish again and looking forward to having some lessons to help us improve our understanding. We arrived at the Beehive hostel and were met by our friends, we previously met in El Chaltern, Cliff and Lorna. It was great to catch up and hear their stories from when we saw them last. Sucre is a beautiful city with many white washed buildings and plazas. Sucre is where the declaration of independence was signed and is the capital of Bolivia (however the parliament is based in La Paz). bolivien streikt wieder einmal, oder noch immer. das problem ist einerseits der standort des neuen busbahnhofes und andererseits die betonarbeiter-gewerkschaft. kurzum, es wird geböllert, geschrien und mit rauchkartuschen geworfen. die zahlreich versammelte polizei mit bewaffnetem aufgebot von maschinengewehr bis pump-gun sieht dem sich ohnehin recht in grenzen haltenden treiben gelassen zu. trotz akustischem terror scheint alles fast friedlich, das stadtleben rundherum geht nahtlos in das demonstrationsgeplärre über. die alten dicken latinas verkaufen ihre vor fett und zucker triefenden churros, der park wird begossen und kleinkinder rennen durch die straßen, während eine gasse weiter das getöse seinen lauf nimmt. ich konnte markus davon überzeugen, dass wir wirklich unbedingt so einen wunderbar bunten teppich/decke brauchen und so stiefeln wir nach dem frühstück ans höchste ende sucr... read more

was für eine lange nacht! markus fiebert und ich habe das gefühl, zu ersticken… wir europäer sind nicht dafür gebaut, auf über 4.000 meter zu schlafen. ohne vobereitung zu mindest. ich glaube, die heizung halt alles sogar noch schlimmer gemacht. noch weniger luft. jedenfalls sind wir froh um die ersten morgenstrahlen und erkunkunden gemeinsam potosí. der silberberg thront, bereits von der ferne furchteinflößend, über der bröckelnden kolonialstadt. die einstmals reichste stadt boliviens beherbergt heute zu viele alkoholiker, die schon mittags nach kühlflüssigkeits-genuss komatös in den straßen liegen. viele schöne kirchen bietet sie aber auch, die stadt. und verwirrend viele märkte auf denen es nur so wimmelt von indigenen frauen, jede mit mindestens einem baby am rücken. die kunterbunt gestreiften tücher aller einwohner enthalten kinder, einkäufe, decken, einfach alles, und sie werden vo... read more

For the next couple of weeks I will be on a tight schedule. I am commited to being in Quito for May 16th. This means I´ll be hopping from city to city in southern Bolivia before flying up to La Paz to visit Lake Titicaca and then on to Cusco, time permitting to trek Machu Picchu, before flying on to Quito from Lima. Arriving in Uyuni after the salt flats was always going to be something of an anticlimax. It was Easter Sunday and I wondered whether there would be some sort of local celebration. If there was, we missed it. Andreas performed one final kindness dropping me off at my hotel and suddenly from being part of a tightly knit group of 6 I was back to pleasing myself again. Geo: -19.0421, -65.2559Travel in Bolivia is full of unique challenges and one that was rumoured to be in play while we were here was roadblocks related to striking teachers, transportation workers, farmers, etc. Miners were the scariest group since they chewed copious amounts of coco leaves in order to remain stoned to cope with the poor working conditions in Bolivian mines (primarily tin). In addition to blockading roads with burning tires (you see melted asphalt strips on all the main roads), they apparently use blasting caps and dynamite to attract attention.
