Sept 27-Oct 1st It was really nice seeing John at the airport when I arrived. THe altitude of La Paz considering it is the highest capital in the world didnt affect me like I had assumed it would. I did purchase a coca cola which helps and John and I after getting my luggage had a cab waiting for us who would take us to the Maryknoll in La Paz. The cab driver was stoked to know that I spoke some spanish and we lightly conversed. Arriving in the front of the Maryknoll in La paz after immediately getting out of the cab I came a cross a key. NOt sure exactly what kind of omen that is but I put it in my pocket with little question as the cab took off and we entered ... read more

There is really not much to say about this tour, besides there was a lot of animals to see!! Also, they are not afraid of people. This because there are about 6 boats arriving to this area every day. I.e a lot of tourists!!! We stayed at a prime facility (compared to on Mogli tours) with beds indoors, showers, toilets, even a bar! I believe the pictures will speak for themselves, and this was indeed a good tour for seeing a bunch of animals. For those wondering about why some of us are holding the anaconda, it's because we had no repellent or sunscreen on.... read more

Our main reason for going to Rurrenabaque, was to see alot of animal life, therefore we decided just to do the Pampas and not the jungle tour. After shopping a bit around, we ended up at a place called "Mogli Tours". Thomas and I don't speak all that much spanish, just enough to get around. But, this was no problem when the guy at Mogli gave us info about their trip. He was so enthusiastic, speaking non-verbally with a lot of gestures. Besides, he repeated his sentences up to two three times. Really easy to understand! As it turned out, this guy owned the company. Feizar, as his name was, looked like a real local amazonian man! And in fact he was. He was raised in the jungle (not by wolfs, even though he looked like ... read more

Ein Bus fuhr uns ... read more

After coming back from the Salar we booked our bus tickets to Rurrenabaque for the next day. A gruelling 18 hour journey on a bus that doesn’t have a toilet or reclining seats and is on a road that hasn’t had a surface put on it. As it happens, Steve became very poorly over night with a cold and thought it was best that we didn’t trundle all the way to the Bolivian jungle, far away from medical help, just in case things got worse. Well, thankfully they didn’t and after five days of resting in La Paz we decided on trying again. This time, however, we decided that for the sake of everything bony and muscular, flying would be the best option. 40 minutes vs. 18 hours - best decision made so far. Our flight ... read more

We decided to fly to Rurrenabaque to save time instead of suffering the winding 18 hour bus ride into the Bolivian lowlands. It felt so good to fly and get to our destination in less than an hour! The plane we took only fit about 14 people and I could pretty much have a conversation with the pilot since I was so close to him, so that in itself was an awesome experience. We landed safely and took the shuttle bus to the airport, which was about the size of an average house. Awesome. While waiting for our bus into town, we met half of our group: Chase, Lauren, and Katie from California. When we got to Rurrenabaque we quickly met the two Belgians in our group, Pieter and Bram, and packed 8 of us into ... read more

I first heard about the Pampas tour as a poor man´s alternative to exploring areas near Iquitos, Peru. I passed on the 20 hour, dangerous road journey to Rurrenbaque and opted instead for a 40 minute flight. Through Honey Tours (located in La Paz on Comercial across from the Wild Rover hostel), the flight was about 1000 BS and the tour (through Indigena Tours, which was pretty good) was an additional 550. The guides definitely respect nature on some level, but if you are looking for something less intrusive (they fed the hawks piranhas we caught and seemed to have some sites prepared, including a croc they killed after it (according to them) bit off the leg of a girl 25 days earlier, and the locals burn some of the area for their crops - it ... read more

It was abit of a mad rush in the end for the pampas trip even though our flight wasn't till 4. We chilled out too much in the morning having breakfast at Loki then dossing around and having dinner at the Wild Rover. Then we tried to find out how long and by which means we would get to the airport with everybody recommending the bus but all giving different times; 1 hour 45 minutes, 1 hour 30 minutes and depending on traffic one women saying 20 minutes, so we decided to give ourselves 2 hours to be safe. We walked down to the main street and every bus to the airport that passed was full so we headed towards where they were coming from, passing an ice cream store with a big a queue. I ... read more

Freezing at the pampas! When we booked the flights to Rurrenabaque we were looking forward to a week in nice and warm climate. Therefore we left all our warm clothes in La Paz and brought a minimum of stuff. After the exciting flight with a 19 seat plane, we arrived in Rurre to cloudy and cold conditions in the evening. We booked a two days trip to the pampas the next day and hoped it would clear up until then. The next morning was the same. Cloudy, cold and raining. We didn´t do much else than freezing for two days, so I would say this trip was a bit wasted for me since I was at The pampas two years ago in nice and warm weather! On the way back to Rurre the road was really ... read more
