Feb 17 – Ushuaia – Les lions de mer du bout du monde / Sea lions from the world’s end

Ca y est, pied à terre à Ushuaia, ville argentine du bout du monde, une ville mythique par sa localisation mais aussi grâce à Nicolas Hulot et les produits marketing dérivés. Et nous sommes accueillis par la pluie, le vent et le froid (quel choc, je m’étais habituée aux températures supérieures à 30 degrés moi depuis 3 semaines) ! Mais au-delà de la météo, la première vision est quand même les montagnes enneigées face à nous (dont les sommets sont sous les nuages), et entre, la mer, enfin le canal de Beagle, qui rejoint les 2 océans. Un panorama que je n’avais jamais vu. Il est 8h30, nous sommes crevées du trajet matinal mais au moins nous avons toute la journée devant nous !

Et aujourd’hui ce sera une balade en bateau sur le canal de Beagle pour aller voir les lions de mer et les cormorans (cf. video). Nous n’accosterons pas sur leur île mais nous approchons quand même très près (si vous regardez les photos, souvenez-vous que je n’ai pas de zoom sur mon appareil).

Impressionnant, magnifique de naviguer au milieu des montagnes, entre l’Argentine et le Chili. Nous avons une accalmie et un peu de soleil pour une mini balade sur une île seulement occupée par les oiseaux, avec un point de vue superbe sur Ushuaia qui est maintenant dégagé. Un lieu unique. Je ne m’attendais à rien pour être honnête en venant ici je prenais cette halte plus pour un passage obligé qu’autre chose, mais ça vaut la peine ! La ville en elle-même est sans intérêt, quoi que, ses petites maisons en tôle colorée un peu ambiance suisse mais pas vraiment en fait un lieu particulier.

>PDJ: quoi, je suis vraiment au bout du monde? Le Cap Horn pas loin, l'Antarctique 'juste' à 1000 km. J'ai vraiment de la chance.

Here we go, landing at Ushuaia, the most southern (Argentinian) city in the world. Thanks to the rain, the wind and the cold to welcome us that morning (a real shock I wasn’t used to go under 30°C for the past 3 weeks) Apart from the weather, the first sight is an amazing view of the snowed mountains in front of us and in between, the sea – well, the Beagle channel, that’s joining both oceans. A panoramic view that I never experienced before. It’s 8.30 am, I’m exhausted from the journey, but there is a full day ahead of us.

Today we are going to sail on the Beagle channel to see the sealions and cormorans. We won’t land on their island but will get close enough (look at the pictures, and I don’t have a zoom on my camera)

Impressive, unique to sail surrounded by mountains between Argentine and Chile. The terrible weather gives us a break when we land on an island occupied by birds and plants. The viewpoint on Ushuaia is amazing. To be honest, I didn’t expect anything before coming here, I thought I had to stop there, for the sake of it, but it is really worth it! The city itself is somewhat uninteresting, although there are little metallic houses that could remind us of Switzerland.

> TOTD: Am I am dreaming or what, am I really at the end of the world, a thousand kilometers away from Antarctica and even closer to Horn Cape? I have to realize how lucky I am to be there and travel the world
