After a few big trekking days we left Torres NP in search of the most famous glacier on the continent and its closest town El Calafate. El Calafate is a Mecca for cold climate travellers and sits at the southern entrance of Los Glacieres National Park. It was also hosting a long weekend music festival when we rolled into town making for a very crowded introduction! We set the van down a couple of blocks back from the main stage of the festival and wandered the craft markets and local brewpub taking in the music and the crowds. In the morning we took the hour-long drive to the entrance of the national park and towards Glacier Perito Moreno. The glacier is enormous: 5km across the face and 60m high, it covers 296km2 rising from the lake ... read more

After taking a relatively short flight (a little more than 2 hours) we arrived in the tourist town of El Calafate one of the entry points to Los Glaciares National Park. This national park was created in 1937 and declared a World Heritage Site thus hopefully preserving it for humanity for years to come. The park is host to 356 glaciers making this the 3rd biggest ice mass in the world after Antarctica and Greenland. To give some additional prospective of this park, the Southern Patagonian Ice Field is nearly 400 km long by 80 km wide in parts, with average height of 1700 metres above sea level. We took a day trip to Perito Moreno Glacier, which is one of the more easily accessible glaciers. I must admit being Canadian and having seen my fair ... read more

5. ... read more

Was will man mehr?... read more

We arrived in El Chalten - Argentina ( the trekking/mountain climbing capital) I know it probably sounds redundant but this in terms of landscape beauty is over the moon.....we camped riverside right at the base of the mountains. We arrived around noon had a nutritious lunch of PBJ and apples. Boy oh boy my body is dying for fruits and veggies, all you can find is apples, the odd nectarine and carrots. We packed our backpacks with snacks and water and started off on a 7km hike to Lago Capri......reaching our destination was a little peace of heaven as it was about 30 degrees! Lago Capri is a glacier lake at the base of Mt. Fritzroy (climbers come from all over the world to summit this mountain) Not a shocker to those who know us well, ... read more
