I´ve decided I like Argentina, and in particular Salta. I menat to ship out of here pretty quickly, but the hostel i´m in is great, randomness is high, and despite a truely horrible and baffling Spannish accent the people are all jolly friendly also. Mainly my activities have centered around the hostel, Salta beer, learning to make empañadas, going to BBQ´s, speaking a shed load of Spannish (my current travel buddy is still the Frenchman with no English and a fondness for sleeping outside under a bench in the hostel), and wandering with little intent around lovely Salta. Pretty European in looks and feel, Salta doesn´t really have any major sites of note. But it is a nice enough place to carm down, realise that its not what you see but the people you meet, and ... read more

Well, i´ve finally made it to Argentina, but the how was quite something. I think i gave a new meaning to the term speed travel. More about first impressions about Argentina after the travelling mayhem that got me here, Well, after leaving Machi Picchu (so glad thats the last time i have to spell it) i jumped on a bus back to Cusco. Dont think beofre i mentioned much about Ollentaytambo, but i kicked around for a while to take it in and played a little guitar to relax. Then after leaving Cusco i got on the first of what was to be many modes of transport. The first bus through Peru was palletable, but made a trial due to the sizable (i´m looking for a kind word but failing) Bolivian lady next to me squashed ... read more

To spread ones wings from within the darkness, and leap into the light with no knowledge of flight, but for instinct... A butterfly must understand freedom better then those that have never experienced confinement. The road that we took across the desert in the Andes, (in a car designed for the sole purpose of transporting an 82 year old woman to the neighbouring supermarket for 150mls of milk and the TV guide), on an unsealed dirt road, riddled with speed bump sized ridges, in 30 dry degrees, with all windows closed to prevent the suffocating dust capturing all five of us, (in the four seats in which we sat), at an altitude of 3800m, made me get a grasp of what confinement really is. Eventually being released to wander through an adobe settlement in the middle ... read more

ITALIANO!

After our exhausting bus trip, we finally arrived in Salta in the Northwest of Argentina. We arrived on a Sunday and were pleasantly surprised by the relaxed atmosphere. Once we checked in to our hostal, we headed out to the plaza to check out what the Salta markets had to offer. The local market was a lot calmer then those in Buenos Aires and there was a lot more room to move around, which Andrew was extremely grateful for. We spent a couple of hours hanging around the plaza simply enjoying the food on offer and watching families enjoying their time together. On our wander about the city, we were roped into booking a 12 hour tour with a tourist agency (we did well to escape the other 13 agencies that approached us) for the next ... read more

Feeling i´d proabably seen all the was to see in Tucamen and still on a high from the fun and frolics of the tractor convention i decided to move on to the next place. As i walked down the street with my backpack i suddenly relaxed and made the fatal mistake of thinking.....wow this is all pretty easy i´m getting really good at the backpacker malarky and practising how i was goign to ask for the ticket to my next destination. Big mistake. As i arrived at the bus station and as rehursed asked for my next bus ticket i was treated to a shake of the head and i cascade of spanish which i have taken to mena´i´m awfully sorry old chaps it appears there has been some kind of landslide on the road ... read more

Here are some photos of the first bit of the trip from my camera. Have finally got them put on a CD and found an internet cafe that will let me put the CD in the machine! Had an amazing last few days in our hire car driving through the Andes, one hell of an experience. No photos of that yet but will do blog soon with all the news from that bit of the trip. We are back in Salta now just to return the now very dusty hire car and catch a bus or two onto next part of the trip heading north to the boarder with Bolivia. bye for now love Rachxxxx... read more
