Took a 12 hour bus during the day from Chile to North Argentina.. so got to watch the beautiful scenery.. and watch the desert turn into green valleys as we dropped in altitude.. at last! Was very excited to arrive in Argentina as am hoping to find a job in buenos aires and stay! .. first impressions are great.. friendly people, modern feel, cheap, but the Argentinian accent is a bit difficult to understand (so i decided to fit in another week of Spanish lessons before i arrive in buenos aires for job interviews!) SALTA was great fun.. a very European feeling city, with a beautiful plaza where we spent a lot of time drinking coffee and watching the world go by. A great bar area, open till 5am, so watched the sun rise on Sunday ... read more

Hallo zusammen!

Out of Chile, and into argentinian Patagonia. The sign at the border said 'The Malvinas are Argentinian'- the only really large sign there; maybe to reflect the 25 year anniversary of the lost war. Gary has a UK passport, but mine's Irish, so I told him he's on his own, loyal as ever ! A 5 hour bus journey over the pampas brought us to el Calafate. The pampas was just what you expect, a vast expanse of nothing- no houses, or people, and barely a road. The bus spent half the journey on a dirt road. A few guanacos, rheas, sheep on huge estancias and that's just about it all the way. Ther hotel in Calafate is very new, all wood, like a big cabin, so we're lucky. The town itself is very much a ... read more

Salta is a great city. One of our favourites. It has a huge European influence, with grand plazas, fabulous food, friendly people and clean 'facilities´(unlike most of Bolivia). Here we had a fun time eating out at posh cheap restaurants, walking through the parks and enjoying the huge siestas , running from around 12pm - 4pm.....What a life. One day we decided to give white water rafting a go. Fun times riding the waves and exciting to be given helmets and safety gear. (Another pleasure of moving from Bolivia to Argentina). ... read more

Welcome to first class........ In Argentina they travel in style. Our first bus experience was on our route from Salta to Mendoza. We jumped on an Andesmar bus and found luxury. We were on the first floor / first class/super cama section. On this floor there are only 6 seats. All of the seats fully recline, have curtains that can be pulled around each seat/bed with pillows and blankets for comfort. We were given 2 course hot meals and ofcourse a choice of wines to accompany. In addition we were entertained with a game of Spanish bingo (which Rich won and was given a bottle of wine) and 2 recent DVDs in the evening. It was fabulous, ridiculously cheap and we loved every minute of it. For all of those travelling or planning to see Argentina, this ... read more

Hi all! I´m sorry this has been such a long time coming, we got really sick of the stupidly slow internet in Bolivia and then went to the desert for a few days! Anyway here´s what we´ve been upto... From La Paz we went to Sucre for a few days and met a really nice group of people who we have been travelling with ever since! There is Polly from UK and her fella Mark from Oz and a Swiss guy called Marc also. We since also picked up two Dutch boys and a South African girl too! Sucre was a really great city and we even found a bar to watch the England-Holland match in (as annoying as it was!). We had a couple of really nice days there, it was good to have ... read more

Deciding to leave Buenos Aires was easy enough the hard part was deciding where to go. In the end after much deliberation I decided to head straight for Bolivia but thought it would be good to break the journey up and stay in Salta for the night. So before I begin to tell you about Salta I feel the need to tell you about my first and only bus journey up until now in Argentina. On my way to BA the bus journey was nearly better than any flight that I’ve been on (Club Class to New York still wins hands down). The seats roll all the way back and part way through the journey we stopped and were rallied into this restaurant where we were given a 3 course meal with wine. Then on the ... read more

Alright I have fallen off the face of the planet i havn´t had mobile reception for like 1 and a half weeks and i havn´t found a decent internet cafe for a while so this post has been back dated some what so i can manage my photo distribution through my posts. Cafayate the jumping ground for the moreno glacier and probably my favorite place so far. we pulled up in our hostel on a monday night. so we decided just to head out to dinner and finish off with some local brews at the recommended don deiago´s (not sure on spelling). any ways after 4-5 beers 2 moheto´s and a couple of rum and cokes the evening was moving along quite nicely. about 2 am and the locals poured in we mixed with the crowd ... read more

Really sorry for serious delays in updating this. Afraid we have to go all the way back to 5 October and our arrival in Salta in North West Argentina. Otherwise known as "Salta the Beautiful" we were a little disappointed to arrive in torrential rain (Salta is rough in the rain!). Apparently it was the first rain for 6 months and will probably be the last for another 6 months. Typical! Had a bit of difficulty finding a nice hostel. Wandered round in the rain accompanied by a manic dog who seemed determined to protect us from cyclists of all things. However hard we tried we just couldn't lose him! It turned out he is is the dog of the hostel where we eventually ended up...apparently he has a thing for backpackers and likes to look ... read more

After our 22 hour bus journey to Tucumen we found a small hotel for our cheapest nights accomodation so far, 40 pesos - equivalent to approx 6 pounds 70 pence (no pound signs out here). We had a walk about the town which had a friendly atmosphere. Locals tend to sit about it the Plazas snogging. Tucuman has some historic buildings and the Bargies seem to love lighting up their buildings as you will see from the photos. Tucumen was only really a stop over on our way to Salta. Salta Salta is a nice city, again a very friendly atmosphere and you do feel very safe. Both Tucuman and Salta have a very European feel to them. On our first day in Salta Stacey was not feeling too well - Salta is at 1,200m and ... read more
