(written by Holly) Well, we're getting on to the blogging bandwaggon quite late, but having just been recommended this site but fellow travellers Michael and Sarah, Jane and I are going to have a stab at keeping it updated. Please excuse any typos and excessively dull bits! So, where to begin? A brief recap of our route so far would be a good place i suppose. We left England on 27th March 2008, and flew to Buenos Aires where we had a fantastic few days watching Tango Shows, attending political demonstrations, walking round graveyards for the wealthy etc. We befriended a guy from Utah called Nick and he came with us when we then we headed south-west to Bariloche, which is in the Argentinian Lake District. We all went horse riding, which was amazing because it ... read more

Salta is a pleasant town in the North of Argentina with a pretty main square, and an Irish bar which showed the European champions semi-final! (poor Liverpool) The surrounding areas though have some of the most spectacular scenery I have seen so far this trip. South of Salta is the Parque Nacional Cordones - the cactus national park! I know we'd already seen a cactus forest in Chile, but that was like a window box in comparison to this place. There were literally thousands of them......as far as the eye could see. Some were up to 10 metres tall, and they grow at rate of about 1-2cm per year, which makes them pretty old. Some looked like little people, some like big hands and others just looked like rude hand gestures! Further south there are loads ... read more

On counting, I found there were exactly 9,786 cacti in this particular part of the park

Little did we know the trek that awaited us when we got off the plane at Puerto Iguazu. Out we trotted and headed towards the nearest taxi, but when I gave the driver the address of our hostel he said something about the road being closed, and that he could only bring us so far and we would then have to walk "50 metres". Hmmmmmm, a tad ominous, but we didn't really have much choice, so we hopped in and about ten minutes later he dumped us at the side of the road and basically just told us to keep going straight. There was obviously some sort of protest going on, as the road was lined with a seemingly endless trail of trucks and tour buses. SO many tour buses, and all of them going nowhere. ... read more

Day 1 Heres the thing, half way through our bus journey which was supposed to take us upto a place called La quiaca in the North of Argentina, we had a change of heart, we met some english blokes called Chris (who is now called Mike because i kept forgetting his name) and simon, apparently they were heading over to Salta where you could get a train directly to the desert town of San Pedro which sounded quite cool, so we hopped off at a city called Tucuman and changed our bus to salta, we arrived at salta at 2am and hopped in a taxi to our hostel to get a good nights sleep. Day 2 Uh Oh, apparently you cant travel everyday to san pedro from salta, so we were all stuck in san pedro ... read more

We´re now in South America and loving it! We flew from Auckland to Santiago on the 2nd April but arrived in Chile before we´d left New Zealand which wrecked our body clocks for a couple of days and it immediately became apparent that not knowing any Spanish could be a problem. We´d learnt a few phrases from a CD and book Jose had bought us but the first question threw us and we were only asked if we wanted rice! It also became clear very quickly that the transport costs given in our guide book had doubled.... Santiago is a big, busy, modern city but not that pretty. It was also covered in a thick layer of smog when we were there which was a real shame as it meant the Andes that loom over the ... read more

Argentina has amazing diversity in it's landscape! As we drive to Cafayate we go through the Sacred Valley of the Indians, where there is lush green vegetation at the bottom. Nearer the top we are surrounded by cacti, bare mountains and desert conditions! We then drive to Salta rafting and drive through absolutely beautiful bare red rocks and mountains with green shrubery as well. 4th April In Salta I visit the Museo de Historical del Norte set in a beautiful courtyard but all in spanish so I don't really know what it was about! Then I go by myself to climb the 1136 steps up Cerro San Bernardo, a hill overlooking the city (yes they have them everywhere). The steps aren't too difficult and although it is red hot they are in the shade. It is ... read more

Sorry it´s been so long. Planning to do a trip at a time (the whole thing being 5 trips) so BA to Santiago ... After leaving Buenos Aires we have a 5 day drive to Ushuaia broken up with a day in Puerto Madryn where we got to see Penguins, Seals and Sea Lions but unfortunately no Orca´s. I absolutely loved seeing Penguins, they were so cute (see facebook photo). Finally got to Ushuaia, the most southernly point you can get to in the world except Antarctica. We went for a beautiful walk in the national park and went to the most southernly point that you can walk to. Unfortunately it is a little underwhelming as there are lots of islands you can see further south so it doesn´t feel like the end of the world ... read more
