Lake District
A beautiful scenic drive Saturday 7
th December (Odyssey Day 29)
Another latish start today. We departed at around 0900 for a scenic drive to our next stop in the Lake District. It really was a beautiful drive and we had many short stops for photos of the lakes and mountains and even a waterfall.
And finally, we had the opportunity to open the windows whilst driving without freezing ourselves!! It was great, and long awaited. It is getting much warmer during the day now, though jackets are still required as it gets dark. It won’t be long at all until it is too hot!
The lakeside camp we had meant to stay in was unfortunately no longer a campsite, so we had to go further for a camp away from the beach. It was bit disappointing after our teaser of a lakeside camp, but we did find a camp within the hour.
Unfortunately it was not as good as we could have wanted, though not anywhere near as bad as some I have seen in my travels.

It’s a matter of just rocking up and asking for some space, as Emma is rarely able to contact them by phone and it’s not the sort of thing we can organise beforehand as we don’t always know how far we will be able to travel. We did notice (it was hard not to) that they had left the fresh carcass of a dead dog out near the bathroom block. I don’t think they were expecting to have anyone staying there yet and may have forgotten about it…
This campsite has a Brewery next door. They just opened about 10 days ago and we made the most of it. It was Johnny’s birthday today and people had been getting him beers all day so he didn’t go into the fridge and see his cakes. It was hilarious because he just thought everyone was being nice and getting his drinks for him.
So after dinner we gave Johnny his cake. Of course, Maddie face-planted Johnny in one of the cakes, so Jonny

Danielle & Ellie carrying the birthday cakes rubbed Maddie’s face back in it. Fortunately they both used the same cake and so we still had one to eat.
Maddie got his new guitar out for some music. Our sing-along was interesting as we only knew some of the words to most songs. Generally when you sing along you kind of listen to the words as you go and use them as prompts for the bits you don’t know. That’s a little hard to do with just the music and no words though.
Johnny cashed his chips around midnight and went to his tent. Earlier, after he had set it up, they had put a whole lot of balloons in his sleeping bag. He actually woke Ken (who he shares a tent with) to ask who was in his sleeping bag. He did realise as soon as he popped the first balloon though, and everyone outside started laughing.
The rest of us wound up shortly after and everyone was headed to bed some time before 2am. Despite the lack of quality facilities at the camp, it was
