When I was doing my trip planning it's fair to say that I was a little bit random. I decided to head to Bariloche after talking to a guy for all of five minutes who said the scenery was spectacular and not to be missed. So I booked the flight and that was about it. Much later I decided to do some research....so I was delighted to discover that Stella's travel agent believed that men from Bariloche were the hottest in all of Argentina and that it is the chocolate capital of Argentina. I assure you that it is entirely coincidental that my 2 night trip was extended to 4 nights.
After a quick tour of the town courtesy of our taxi driver we went back in for dinner on our first evening and spent a bit of time wandering around. It's gorgeous! It's a ski town, situated at the foothill of the Andes, surrounded by lakes and mountains. The main buildings in the town centre are all pretty new, and there's definitely a Swiss / German feel to it. Every other shop seems to be a chocolate shop, the most famous and supposedly the best is Mamuschka. I have
determined that some research is required in order to confirm whether or not this is actually the case.
First up on the agenda though was horseriding at Estancia Fortín Chacabuco, about 30 minutes out of Bariloche on the Patagonian plains. Yes, those of you who are related to me can stop laughing now, and what's more it was even my idea. Armed with fistfuls of hayfever and asthma medication, we made our way to the Estancia around lunchtime and had time for a walk. The morning group returned about 2.00 pm, and then we all sat down together for a delicious Parilla (BBQ), which was beef, chorizo and salad. Just when I thought all the meat was gone they turned up with another huge serving of it.
Then finally it was time to get on the horse. Given that I was last on a horse at about age 8 and I am seriously allergic to horses, I was a bit nervous to say the least! But there were several people on the tour who had never ridden a horse before and the horses were extremely gentle and patient. And having taken 3 anti-histamines and being careful not to
actually touch the horse (quite tricky when you're on one) it went very well, although my leg must have brushed against the horse because I came back with massive hives. Does 4 anti-histamines in a day sound like a lot?
The scenery was absolutely stunning, and the day was gorgeously sunny. We had a really great group of people on our horse ride, including some hilarious and quite thick accents from Yorkshire and West Virginia. They probably thought ours was pretty funny too though in fairness. So all in all, another fantastic day in Argentina.
By special request: We travelled to Bariloche on a McConnell Douglas airplane, MD Series 80. A seating layout of 3 x 2, it had possibly the smallest seats I've every encountered.
