breakfast
the usual Joe’s Blog (day 5) Desert, Grumps and Deer.
Mum comes into my, Nady and Bens tiny room waking us at about 8:30 am as we had been told to get out of the room by 10:00 and we didn’t want to leave at 1:00pm like the day before. So we all went down one by one to have the usual small breakfast of bread, a type of croissant and hot chocolate. We managed to leave the little guesthouse by 10:30 but of course after filling up with petrol, buying a few goodies and new wiper blades it was about 11:15 when we finally left the city of Santa Rosa with Mum on the first driver’s shift.
Now for the next 6 hours we drove through an endless desert which wasn’t the most interesting of sites as there was no sign of life anywhere except for the constant splatting of bugs on the windscreen. The road through this dessert was very straight and very empty (maybe 1 car every 15mins) but this did mean we could go very fast for a long time averaging nearly 100mph! But unfortunately going at this speed provides terrible fuel economy (14-16mpg) so we had
the room
very small to refuel at every petrol station possible during this period which was starting to prove very expensive petrol wise. For the last hour or so of the endless boring desert before we got to our next stop in a city called Neuquén where we had decided we would get some dinner. Dad decided we needed to now save petrol so we went at a slower, constant pace and by now we were getting very bored and a bit tired. We tried to play some games for a bit which didn’t go down too well because some of us were getting a bit grumpy as well, and then Nady choked on a sweet which really killed everyone’s mood. So after traveling another hour or so in utter silence we arrived in Neuquén and then inevitably an argument started about where to eat and stuff like that, I won’t go into too much detail about it, but basically we ended up in a food court in a shopping mall eating McDonalds (Nady called her happy-meal a sad meal) and other junk like that, all of us feeling grumpy. Once we got going again I think we were feeling a bit better after
petrol station
one of the many stops having a bit of a rest from the car and something to eat and so we started the last leg of the first part of our journey driving into the sunset heading for the lake district were we are going to stay a few days.
We arrived in our destination, at the now becoming common hour of midnight, after the last 5 hours driving which included filling up with petrol (out of a spare jerry can full of petrol) in the middle of nowhere in the black, cold night and coming across lots of wild deer on the side of the road as we came into the lake district which was nice as a lot of the family had never seen deer. We found our reserved apartment easily enough which is a lovely, cosy place with a lot of character. I am looking forward to staying a few days here, it seems to be a very beautiful area even if it is a bit cold.
Stats for day 5:
Max speed: 105 mph
Distance travelled: 1019 km
