San Antonio De Areco (23 June 2006) The mellow town of San Antonio De Areco, which is ground zero for Gaucho culture is located about two hours drive from the centre of Buenos Aires. Nestled in the Northern Pampas of the province, San Antonio De Areco dates from the early 18th century. We decided to spend a night, whilst still in BA, at one of the historic Estancias (ranch) to sample the life of the Gaucho, which defines the Argentinean culture. We chose to stay at the beautiful El Ombu. After meeting our hostess and some fellow visitors over a welcome drink, we headed off on our first two hour horse ride, we were accompanied by a Gaucho and his girlfriend Gaucha. The weather was fantastic, crystal clear skies and the surrounding landscape glistened in the ... read more

Where to go from the magnificent BA? Heard good things about Rosario, smaller city just 4 hrs northwest. Unfortunately, these good things probably happened when it was warmer than 10 degrees - hello slow season! Main monument - closed. Museums - closed. Lots of walking around in the cold for us, but lucky it's a beautiful city. Our taxi driver from the bus terminal was very peppy, trying to talk to us in his limited English, so his enthusiasm was infectious. One thing that we found about these small towns in Argentina is that a few places have definitely taken a turn for the worse - or the better for us - since the economy crashed here. The hotel we arrived at in Rosario would have been quite a swanky place in its heyday, with sweeping ... read more

Not much to say about Iguazu - I arrived, saw the waterfalls from the Argentinian and Brazilian sides, ate lots of steak, made the acquaintance of a Peruvian IT nerd, and left. Very beautiful, and stretching over a large area, the falls make Niagara look like a streak of piss and the place has a slightly other-worldly atmosphere. The vegetation is so green, the falls so dramatic, and with rainbows everywhere one feels like one is in a Disney recreation of the Garden of Eden (the guards quietly encouraged me to put my clothes back on and to stop berating wanton women). Enjoy the fairly bog-standard photos. More on Brazil shortly.... read more

After another quick breakfast in a considerably busier hotel restaurant, we readied ourselves for a visit to one of the Guaraní villages in the area. All of the students from University of New Mexico occupying most of our hotel were also getting ready for their visit to the Iguazú National Park. As they boarded a large coach (similar to the one that took us to the park the day before), a large truck, similar to an army personnel carrier, arrived at the premises to pick the three of us up. Our “expedition” must have seemed either terrible or much more interesting to the students, since the entire bus load could not take their eyes from our large 4x4 as we passed by their coach and left the hotel. Before actually heading for our destination, our driver ... read more

After hotel check out and entrusting our surplus luggage to the Marriott’s concierge, we took a short taxi ride to Aeroparque, the local airport dedicated to flights within Argentina. As it was now common for us on this trip, this taxi driver also had several recommendations for us once he learned that we were going to Iguazú. He warned us to stay away from a place named “Tres Naciones” (Three Nations) close to the border with Paraguay and Brazil where several tourists had been victims of crime in the recent past. The check in and security process at Aeroparque was straightforward and we soon reached the gate area. Our Aerolineas Argentinas flight was scheduled to depart at 12:55 PM from Gate 7, located almost at the center of the long terminal. When the time came for ... read more

Alkaa matka lahestya loppua, viela kuitenkin lyhyt selostus viikosta Buenos Airesissa. Paiva kului kuitenkin sankysu... read more

The following are excerpts from my journal over the last four days or so: 24 April - Monday 11am. Our passports were not exit-stamped upon leaving Brasil. This is a formality that is apparently often skipped, but another English-speaking tourist on the bus last night told us we'll probably run into problems trying to get back into Brasil later without the exit stamp. So we went back to the border this morning to take care of it. Not a problem, despite a wasted morning. But it's okay! We're both healthy and should have no problem making up for lost time at the Falls. 5pm. The falls were beautiful. As Eleanor Roosevelt once said, "Poor Niagara." I don't think I drank enough water. Not feeling so good. 8pm. My body aches in ways I've never felt before. ... read more

We are now in Argentina and have completed our first country, Brazil. The last two days were spent at the largest waterfalls in the world! We visited the Brazillian side first and were staying at a youth hostel 12 km from Foz de Iguaçu. It had its own swimming pool and was really good. That night we went into town to see what was going on. On the way a Brazillian guy who worked at the falls got on and we started chatting. He said he lived close to where our hostel was and if we wanted to come round the next day for dinner... we had planned to visit the Argentinian side the next day so made our excuses and thought no more about it. Town was dead so we decided to head back to ... read more

I am also storing snaps on a seperate website which I will be sending invites out for soon so that all my stunning photography can be viewed in all it's glory. Happy reading! 14th March 06 - 23rd March 06 I left Buenos Aires with the intention of chillin´out for a few days in the small town of Colonia, across the Rio del Plata in Uraguay. The idea was to take it easy for a few days and suss out a plan for traveling through south America with impeccable timing to meet up with Sarah in Ecuador in May. Both objectives were achieved in short ... read more

It´s like the most brilliant poet of our time once said: ¨Don't go chasing waterfalls Please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you're used to I know that ypu're gonna have it your way or nothing at all But I think you're moving too fast ¨ The falls of Iguazu (Argentinian side) were the basis for this beautiful work of art. While I didn´t have the same muses that stood behind T-Boz, Left Eye (RIP), and Chilli... I still was amazed by the sheer beauty of the waterfalls. They are big. It´s like if you put yourself into a barrel and went down the river, you would probably not survive... THATS HOW BIG. I got into Puerto Iguazu after a 16 hour bus ride. The key to an effective day after a long bus ... read more
