Hopping on a fast catamaran across the Rio de la Plata (silver river) we cruised into Argentina's capital. Joined a couple of free walking tours for a fascinating insight into Argentine culture - fuelled by a mix of European immigration resulting in Spanish language, Italian food, French architecture and British sports. Caught slightly cheesy Tango show in Cafe Tortoni (the oldest in Buenos Aires) and wandered through atmospheric Recoleta cemetery with Evita's grave and a huge array of monolithic tombs, some slowly decaying (would be very spooky at night). Visited impressive presidential palace and adjacent bicentennial museum with their strong references to Falkland Islands/Islas Malvinas sovereignty (also supplemented by semi-permanent street protests and graffiti). In the evenings went for a couple of nights drinking and dancing - left the hostel at 2am on Christmas Eve to head out to club (somehow we got into VIP area), walking back through another thunderstorm as dawn was breaking...
