Got up and took a huge bag of joint washing to the local launderette for collection later. (Jo had run out of socks!) 3GBP well spent..... We walked to the main square and tried to take dollars out of our dollar card in order to pay the next leg of the trip's kitty. BIG PROBLEM. News on national TV implied that the Government has now banned the issuing of dollars from cash machines (which had been a common feature of nearly all the machines throughout the countries we have visited so far). Even the machines that say 'dollars only' would only dispense Argentinian pesos. This is a bit of a nuisance really as the plan had been to take dollars out when we needed them. Aaah well.... we'll sort something out. After no success with the dollars at about fifteen banks, we thought it was time to give up and enjoy our day. We walked on to the Puerto Madero (the docks area which had recently been redeveloped into smart bars, restaurants, etc..) We stopped for a coffee as the weather was appalling and it was pouring with very heavy rain. Wandered through the docks area in the rain and stopped
off at a local bar/restaurant for a 'tostado' (a toasted sandwich for lunch). We wandered our way back late afternoon. On our return, we discovered a small craft market and Ed liked a hand-painted T shirt and enquired about this and was told to come back the following day because the T-shirt was unfinished and the artist wasn't available that day. Whilst there, Jo bought another pair of ear-rings! In the evening, we walked up the main road in the opposite direction and found a pizza/pasta place for dinner. We each had a home-made pasta and Jo had an alcolhol-free beer as she was told to avoid all alcohol on these antibiotics. Back to the hotel to bed.
Would have loved a Gap Year a few years ago but it never happened. Have now both managed to sneak ten weeks off work and are making the most of it with an overland trip around part of South America. Not luxury travel - haven't put up a tent for years which may be one of the key challenges of the tour!... full info
