Squirrel Monkey

One of the highlights of a visit to the Akumal Monkey Sanctuary is time in the squirrel monkey enclosure. Their curiosity had them climbing across our shoulders and perching on our heads, not shy at all about getting petted. Many monkeys taken in at the sanctuary are on track to be released to the wild, but some that were raised as pets, like this squirrel monkey, have been unable to learn to fend for themselves and will remain at the sanctuary.
